Looking for a fixed blade knife that will last me a long time, for fishing, camping, ect. I got tired of all my cheap chinese knives breaking. I’m currently looking at getting a ka-bar knife, (possibly a vintage one off eBay). Anyone got outdoor experience with one of these, or a recommendation for something better?

get a Cattaraugus if you can find it, if not get a kukri or a buck 120.

buck 120 is more for preping game and stuff like that, ka-bars are more for general tasks.

the kukri is just the best camp tool IMO and pretty cheap and easy to take care of, that is if you know how to care for knives

Kabar MkIIs are made for field/utility use and fighting. They are decent outdoor knives but you need to take care of the carbon steel so it doesn't rust.
Don't get a vintage one and trash it. Get one of the rubber handled ones with a plastic sheath if you want it for outdoor/fishing. I would also recommend the short version, plain edge.

I think I’m actually probably gonna go with a 120 now. I have a buck 105 that my dad gave me, he got it new when he was a kid. It’s a nice knife but I barely use it because I really don’t want to destroy it, I want to pass it on to my son one day. But a new 120 that I can beat on may be the way to go.

That's an awesome heirloom, and a good idea to beat up a new knife rather than your dads. I have my grandpa's old fishing gear now that he's dead, I just keep them safe and never use them. Too sentimental

Yeah first time I've ever heard someone say that too. I keep one on me while I'm working because I do a lot of cooking off my tailgate, and generally because having a knife in construction is handy. I beat it up and never have any issues. Doesnt seem to hold an edge for very long, but I could just be fucking up the sharpening process.

its the tanto with the plastic sheath and the rubber handle. you will be hard pressed to find a knife as good for under $100. you can find them new for around $80 and lightly used for as low as $50 on ebay.

No, they got a super thick edge because the knife was first designed to be used as a bayonet, with utility being second. The Ka Bar was made to replace the Marine Raider Stiletto, which was a pure fighting knife, it was pretty shitty for utility.

I think there are better options for the price.

I uploaded a link to one dbk video where the knife fails. The knife has a very week rat tail that has history of breakage.

The knife edge seems to be tough but that's because they sharpen it very wide. Which is something you can do with any knife.

If you want a small and handy knife. The more conservative options are the mora garberg and the terava jakaripuukko .
For bigger ones, terava skarma. Or maybe kabar beker? The skarma is a proper chopper tough.

I think all the knife i mentioned will have better steel and heat treatment and overall construction than the kabar

Their warranty is still excellent. This knife is 31 years old and abused to hell and back and they're still willing to warranty it. I don't have a 110 but I will soon. Classic, and useful. My buddy has only ever used his 110 to skin/gut deer his whole life. Works great

Should I get a Full Size KABAR straight Edge in 1095 Cro-Van or a Buck 120 General Pro in S35VN?
kinda biased to the buck because the kabar seems mil-larpy
I cannot find any comparisons without Boomers and their hallmark grandiosity and sloganeering obfuscating any useful information

Straight up comparison the Buck 120 in S35VN is going to be far superior to any knife in 1095, never owned a Buck or Kabar but I have a Terava Skrama and it's probably the nicest knife I've owned, the steel is 80CrV2 which is quite decent, and it's greater than half the price of a Buck 120 General Pro.

BUCKS are almost entirely for processing game. With few exceptions, like the massive 124, you're better off with a "utility" type knife.

KABAR in any style is fine for a touch, general purpose knife. Hard to break, easy to sharpen and maintain. You can beat the shit out of them.

Knives are a toolbox, you pick the best tool for the job. building a shelter, processing fire wood, cleaning large game = big ass knife.

Most camp/survival tasks tend to be addressed with a smaller blade that is easier to handle. Try an Ontario rat 3 or an Esee.

But leave the Bucks for game processing.

I want to note that. 1095 ≠ 1095crovan

1095 is a 18th century steel that was used in WW1 and WW2 daggers,sabers..etc
So it got a huge reputation. That's why kabar named their steel 1095 crovan to try to affiliate themselves with 1095.

1095 crovan is more similar to 52100. It just adds a bit of vanadium for more wear resistance.

S35vn is Harder and more wear resistant than 1095crovan. The edge of s35vn will last you like 3 times longer. S35vn is also stainless.

The buck is also tougher because kabars are known for having a super weak rat tail that will break under big stress.

I would even recommend the normal 420 buck over the kabar. The quality of the heat treatment and the construction of buck is much superior.

The only reason why the kabar is a thing at all is because is the knife the army uses. It's a cheap knife that the army probably buys for 3 dollars each

The kabar has a very wide and thick edge wich makes it bad for any fine task.

The kabar may be good for ¿fighting?
but it's really bad for anything else.

As utility tools. Esse are mega over priced. You are paying like 100 dollars for a knife that has the same steel and a worse heat treatment than a 5 dollars mora.

If you want utility grab a mora,Enzo,Wood jewel,Roseli,Terava,Benchmade pukko or a manly.

If you're chopping brush use a machete. That's the best tool for the job.

Is true that knife don need a full tang. Longswords just use a rat tail.
The problem is that the kabar rat tail is poorly heat treated and can break if you batton.
Even a 5 dollar mora basic can batton. You may brake the handle but the actual steel of the knife won't brake.
If you batton with the kabar you will brake the knife in half.
This is a huge quality issue. A piece of steel so thick should never brake.

Also

The whole reason why they make this knives so thick,heavy and big is to be good at battoning. Otherwise they would carry a thinner and smaller more controlable knife

They changed from 440c to 420hc which has slightly worse edge retention but is quite a bit tougher and has better corrosion resistance it doesn't hold an edge like any of the new super steels but it sharpens up real easy and with the Paul Bos heat treat it performs better than any other 420hc on the market, the handle is still phenolic/(Bakelite) which is pretty much indestructible in all practical use the 119 and 120 are still great knives especially for the price.

Virtually everyone. The bushcraft super steel meme market is a hyper niche overpower thing for rich collectors just like muscle cars or dragon dildos. Most outdoorsman are anti consumerism. Low Budget: Morakniv Companion Heavy Duty / Mid-Budget: Condor Terrasaur / High Budget: Barkriver; Benschmade or the well established Fjällkniven F1 or A1 or S1 (I'd go with the new F1 with cruwear steel or at least COS steel. It's a 7mm thick full tang slab of laminated meteoric hardamantium, quenched in wolf blood by viking blademasters in Japan. What concerns me is the handle which is much less fancy than the steel. Pretty much everything but the steel feels like they cheaped out. Other manufacturers have shit with nice Micarta handles and much fancier sheaths and the steel is stuff like Niolox although not as fancy as laminated cobalt.

Dunno why anyone would want such a big knife but if that is what you are looking for then they are clearly one of the best on the market. I'd rather buy the tk2, but then again I don't do any chopping with my knives.

I had narrowed it down to FK A1X in the 300 range and Lionsteel M7 for 100 less. I was paying more for a knife that is shorter but thicker, maybe slightly better for batoning but I think length is mechanically better for chopping. Cobalt steel is probably better than Sleipner but do I really care? The tests on the LS show that it's tough as fuck anyway. Sheath was OK in both cases, maybe a bit big on the M7. The handle was very nice Micarta vs. Fallkniven's thermoplastic scales that people report to go to shit in a few years. Finally I don't like the FK shape at all, it looks like a sharpened stick of steel. M7 looks like it was designed with a purpose. I got the feeling that the A1X was made to look impressive on paper for collectors/enthusiasts and you're paying for the pedigree. If I pay more I want a global upgrade, not better chemistry in the steel and worse everything else.
I hope I didn't get memed with the M7 because it does look great and it's reported to be a great all around knife but idk, I don't trust random people on the internet who try things once and write an essay on how it's the best knife in their collection.

Another thing that put me off of that knife was that many people were commenting on this with "yeah but I'll be getting custom scales/sheath for this knife anyway" which I think is a massive red flag. You pay 300+ bucks for a tool that is fitted with poor parts but that's OK because there's a custom aftermarket selling you fixes?

OP, if you need something cheap, look at Mora knives. They can get pricey but the cheap ones are 20 bucks or less. The “Basic” line is ~15 dollars. The mora companion is nice. I’ve carried a mora robust (not great field knife, very thick spine. Hard for me to featherstick with) for 4 years almost daily and used almost as much. I’ve had 0 problems with the sheaths and locking. Keep edges sharp with a honing steel rod. Daily use, do it once a week. Theres a guy in alaska that has a video about it but i can’t find it. Old dude big beard. Really chill.

Nothing wrong with owning a small collection of knives. Make good gifts.

I’d have to say if you want only one do it all tool, get a kukri. Nepalese made. Try to avoid the tourist ones. I’ve seen them use it to gather wood, and cook with.

Consider a silky saw (or similar type) in your toolset. Less calories and work, easiest saw I’ve used. Safer than swinging an axe or hatchet for a beginner, less technique sensitive for sure. Doesn’t replace them though

A K-bar is a great multi-tool for heavier work, especially if you pair it with a smaller, sharper knife (like an Opinel). It can cut, pry, chop, dig, hammer, stab, scrap, etc. but it sucks at small, detail kinda work, and that's where your smaller knife comes in

A lot of the name brand stuff is great.

The SS blades from before about 1960 or so aren’t nearly as good at holding an edge as modern stuff, but the carbon steel knives are tip top.

Not him but I’ve been through many knives. A Kabar was my first night and I actually depended on it for survival for almost a year at one really rough point in my life. It was constantly bending and having to be brought back to true, eventually it just broke on me. I’ve had many knives since then. It was probably the worst fixed blade I ever had other than a kabar jaroz globetrotter that had virtually the same horrible geometry as a standard kabar but was full tang. Way too thick, way to heavy, not about cutting anything. Not a good pry bar either. It was designed for stabbing nazis and digging out shrapnel on a budget and now it has an insane premium on it because of the larp association with the military. It’s a shit knife.
