Why didn’t mccandless try to swim across the river, even if it was a high risk of drowning? Going back to the bus was a death sentence. Even Ralston thought he was doomed but saw a way out. I think his circumstances made him face death in a more direct way: literally being trapped by a rock. It’s not like he could go back to a bus and lie in bed until he croaked

Ralston was retarded for not telling anyone where he was going and not taking any means of communication. But he had some real goddamn grit. And he went on to do some real hardass climbs. I feel bad for the dude because it seems like the experience really fucked him up and he's kind of walked away from climbing. But I'm glad that he's walking away and not pulling a Ueli Steck and swan-diving off Everest.

McDickless was also retarded, but unlike Ralston he was a quitter. For that reason, OP is, frankly, a dumb question.

He actually survived fine with the gear he brought. The reason he died is because of some roots he ate that had a fungus or spore or something in them that essentially paralyzed him. And the book of edible plants that he had with him told him those roots were ok to eat. He basically just died of bad luck.

You always die of bad luck if you see it that way. The truth is that even seasoned hunters go back to a home eventually.
Had he been more humble he could've done like ForestAnon and went innawoods while doing seasonal work occasionally. This way he would've had food. Then with enough experience he could've gone full hunter gatherer.
