take the BoB trailer pill, carry gear on singletrack with no stress, no problems. burley also has a cool xc trailer i might get for heavy duty work

You don't want to be carrying stuff on your back, it might feel alright when you set off but you're gonna be suffering after a few miles, with a couple of big panniers and a handlebar bag you should have plenty of capacity, get front panniers too if you want to pack heavy
