I have woods near me that go for miles i believe. Does it count as being out if i go into the woods somewhere, getting lost, then not looking at maps until i want out? This doesnt strike me as a bad idea.

Yes, it counts as out. But don't go in planning at getting lost, people have gotten lost and died few hundred meters from a main trail.

I'm in alaska and it's pretty hard to get completely lost because we have big mountains to use to figure out our position.

I'm not sure how people get lost at all. Even in the western US, there's practically nowhere you can go where you can't just walk in one direction for less than a day and hit some major road.
