>>243788Depends on the state, but yes, it can be done. Some states are easier than others. Some bikes come from the dealer ready to go (KTM EXC's and Yamaha WR's, for example). Downside to that is they're 50-state legal, so they've got all the california emissions crap on them. I opted to go with the XCW ("dirt bike", for offroad use only from the factory) and put what was needed on it myself rather than desmog the thing later.
Equipment must meet state and DOT requirements. Headlight, taillight, DOT-stamped tires, horn, and a mirror are the minimum requirements in my state. Turn signals are only required if the vehicle came with them from the factory.
Once the bike has the required equipment, it's a VIN and equipment compliance inspection at the state patrol office, then title/plates at the DMV. You'll need the [M]otorcycle endorsement on your license.
It's nice being able to ride from my garage, put on a few highway miles to the trails, play in the dirt for a few hours, pop out to whatever road happens to be convenient, then go home whichever way I feel like. Pic related.
70mpg commuting around town doesn't suck either.
