So I'm looking to buy a bicycle just for some casual riding around the neighborhood, on pavement mostly.

I went to a local bike shop... Their cheapest bike was $680. He said not to get a Wal-Mart bike (typically ~$200) because they fall apart fast.

Anyone have a suggestion on what I should do? I don't really want to spend >$700 after tax... But I don't want a horrible bike, either. Isn't there a middle ground?

My advice here is generally also my advice for cars.
You first buy a cheap used one, preferrably one where you don't have to do THAT many repairs.

You now have a relatively cheap starting bike you can use to get a feel for biking in general. Find out what you like about biking, find out what your current bike is lacking and which your next one should have etc.

I don't know if things changed in ˜15 years but Decathlon bikes are cheap and sturdy. The only problem is they're heavy.

Not really. Walmart bikes are heavy pieces of shit made with the worst chinkshit components that will wear out or fail within a few years of light use (pedals, gear changers, brakes, tires etc). This is fine for a kid who will outgrow it in 2 years, but grown ass men should be riding a real bike. A decent quality low-end bike will run you at least 500-600.

i used a teen sized mongoose mountain bike from the ages of 8-16 and it is still usable. sold it though since i grew. he is going to stay on pavement, and so doesnt really need anything fancy to start with

I also grew up poor and rode a walmart bike for the first 28 years of my life. Then when I finally got some money I bought myself my (low-range) dream bike, and I still consider it one of the best purchases of my life. If only I knew sooner how big of a difference a few hundred dollars could make.

You only really need an expensive bike if you're going on long road rides or mountain biking. Doesn't sound like you're doing either of those so the walmart bike should do fine as long as you take care of it. >>2440569 is a good option as well. You might find something on pinkbike too.

They're bulk-made Chinesium bikes, but they're the same chinesium your Schwinn uses, and a good bit cheaper. I put 50 miles a week on mine ($450) during the spring and it's holding up just fine.

Do not buy a Walmart bike. There's a night and day difference between a Walmart bike and a real bike, they're practically completely different objects. Never mind the fact that Walmart bikes are not going to last, and when they do break you can't buy components to replace the broken parts. There's so many little adjustable parts on bikes that cheaping out on just creates a terrible experience for you. The brakes will be awful and you'll never be able to adjust them right, the wheels will bend and you'll never be able to true them, the derailleurs and shift cables will never be aligned properly, as soon as you readjust them they'll get out of tune because all the materials and fasteners are cheap and bendy. All the little screws everywhere are made of soft metal and will strip and back themselves out. The handlebars won't stay straight on the fork. The seat will be uncomfortable. The whole thing will be heavy and slow.

You can get a used real bike for the same price as a Walmart bike and it'll be such a better purchase you don't believe it. Picrel I got it for 50 bucks and it's been treating me right for a decade.

Also, if you want to use your bike as transportation, maintain the gears, brakes, and chain well, but let everything else (handlebars and paint coat) degrade, so it becomes a less conspicuous target for theft. Use a lock of higher quality than your bike itself as well (A bike can break but a good lock lasts forever).

We are telling you to buy a relatively reliable bike that is about the lowest quality you can get that will still function. Just get a name brand bike from 2000 if you are worried about cost

It means figuring out your use case, then finding the right style and quality of bike that suits said use case. There are different types of bikes for different styles of riding - casual road, racing road, gravel, dirt, tricks, touring, sand/mud etc. There are different types of materials that bikes are made out of - some are faster/lighter and fragile like carbon, others are slower/heavier but more rugged like titanium and steel. Some are in-between, like aluminum. But the quality of the material is also very important. The price will vary hugely based on the frame material and quality.

If you just want a bike to ride around the street once in a while and don't really know your long-term use case, get yourself a used steel/aluminum road bike. Ride it for a while, and by then you should have a better idea of what you need. You might just be happy with it and never buy another bike.
