i always bring an emergency tarp in my fanny pack, and a small kit of basic survival supplies. the tarp is only 250 grams and the rest of it is things i'd bring anyways. its barely any weight, worn weight, lets me set up to get out of rain showers and chill without taking my pack off and digging through it, but the main reason i keep it: a lot of local hiker disappearances seem to involve abandoning their camps and gear. don't know why, don't know how, but i'd like to be prepared if it happens to me.

I just bought a mini-pillow (about 1.5 feet long) from a random store and made my own pillow case for it. It rolls up into the size of a football and I stick it in my sleeping mat's compression bag which has plenty of extra room. It's worth it for a good night's sleep.

I’m 500 miles into a 1200 mile thru hike currently and this thread is making me consider ordering an inflatable pillow. For about 300 mile I carried a cordura nylon hoodie and used it every night as a pillow. Then about 130 miles ago I realized that it had only been worn as a hoodie twice so I sent it home. Now I’m stuffing my clean laundry into my sleeping back stuff sack and its fucking miserable bros. How much do inflatable pillows weigh deflated? What’s a good brand? What can I order right now and have delivered to the next town by Thursday? I just want to sleep well and not carry unnecessaryily heavy shit bros

I actually can’t stand inflatable pillows and have to use a compressible regular pillow like the one in OP. The thing is that all inflatable pillows are hard, even if you under-inflate them that just changes the height at which they get hard. I just have a random Coleman compressible standard fill pillow I picked up…I don’t even know when or where, but damn I love that thing like you would not believe.

The thing that mentally disturbs me about hiking is that people actually go out there and take all of this extra weight carrying the most most dumb useless things. Like a fucking pillow. A fucking pillow. Bitch, if you want to be comfy stay in your room and sleep in your bed. I also see people taking all of this food outside like they're doing a bbq at their backyard. What the fuck is wrong with people? Maybe it's just the way I see hiking, I only got into hiking because of mountaineering, and climbing as many mountains as possible, I don't go out to do fucking barbecues in the backcountry, or to take a fucking pillow with me, what the fuck is wrong with people? Oh yeah and people who take crocs with them and walk around camp with them on, what the fuck? Jesus fucking christ.

Sleeping pad, field chair, gps watch. Where I live has a constant layer of moisture from light rainfall so sitting down on wet moss/logs/etc gets my butt wet and I don't like that. AND
extra seat when you're with friends and someone doesn't have one.
and a zillion other small little uses outside of its intended primary use. i use it as a little sun blocker/ghetto door for my tarp in the summer. and a dry picnic spot for my food when i cook. i've distilled water with one (involved destroying it) and a few other things.

PNW yes. I use a poncho as a shell for my pack which serves the same purpose and provides a secondary rain protection option. I may try out your suggestion if only for having a portable dry surface for laying things out, and it may be more convenient to carry on my FLC as opposed to pulling the poncho out of my bag's side pouch.

that's the main reason i like it. quick access and quick stow. and i like that its pocket sized so you can keep it on your body in something like a flc, fanny, belt pouch etc. if your poncho is accessible without taking the pouch off you may not find it as useful, but if its not it makes the act of taking your pack off so much more graceful to be able to retreive your dry surface from a pocket on your front or hip as opposed to the pack itself. a small thing but the quality of life adds up when you have to keep your pack dry so often up here.

I dont understand who is hiking with enough extra clothing to make a pillow to begin with. Like I guess if you have the extra clothes along then it makes sense but my little inflatable nemo pillow is much lighter/smaller than the same amount of extra clothing that I probably would never wear to begin with. At night pretty much the only piece of clothing I'm not wearing is my rain shell and even that sometimes gets worn on the really cold nights.

I'm in agreement with this. I don't us it in the hammock but always bring the inflatable pillow when ground sleeping. I have a pair of Hiitave water shoes that I bring for camp/water crossings. Gives me an opportunity to let the feet and shoes breath, dry out the socks etc.

I will add (although luxury is not really the word) the tarp snake. It's not strictly necessary but as mostly hammock and occasional group camper it makes setting up and packing down basic bitch A frames a cinch. I also really enjoy being able to prep the tarp and leave it available till night or threat of rain.

If you're a back sleeper get a Nemo Fillo.
It's inflatable but has a bit of foam padding so it doesn't feel like you're resting your head on a balloon.
If you're a side sleeper get the Sea to Summit Aeros Down, as its name implies it has a bit of down padding and it's a bit higher

Have you tried other memory foam pillows? Those are the best for me at home. I know there's the Nemo Fillo, Therm-a-rest Compressible, and REI, Teton Sports, and Wise Owl Outfitters make some as well. Paris Outdoors makes a down pillow that looks like it could be good. I'm half tempted to spent $120 on pillows just to try them all but that's expensive af. I sleep on my side in a elongated fetal position.

I don’t think you’ve ever actually gone backpacking, or have very little experience doing so. The attitude that it’s supposed to be uncomfortable is only shared among the ill-informed and the inexperienced. Ironically, this is the same reason people bring Crocks; they think being uncomfortable because they have an excessively heavy pack is just part of hiking.

To make a pillow I use my jacket and stuff it inside of its hood, works pretty well.

ExPed UL medium is 1.9oz. I’ve used it on the ground and it works well, but I mostly use it in a hammock. On the ground I use it fully inflated, but in my hammock I keep it like 3/4 full. It’s not too thin, and has a nice shape.

I have that exact pillow and I hate it

I roll up a hoodie or something but I want to get a cheap neck pillow for the hammock. The other night I popped a sleeping pill cause I forgot my earplugs and didn't want to be freaking out internally about every little sound. Sleeping pills are awesome to have on hand just in case.
