I've been wearing a pair of Justin western boots for several months now. They are extremely comfortable, keep my feet dry and mud-free. I want to wear them when I go hiking/in snow in the city, but know that western boots have little to no ankle support and I don't want to twist an ankle. Is there anything I could do/wear inside the boot to brace my ankles?

Jesus, do yours have a heel like that?

I cannot picture that being any fun at all to hike in.

All I could think of would be wear two layers of heavy hiking socks as some padding, might help your ankles. Seriously though, consider getting some normal boots. I recently got some Bates USMC RAT surplus boots. Cheap as hell, padded, breathe well, still keep me nice and warm, pretty damn waterproof. They should work very well for snow, but are not wet-weather boots so swamps and shit are probably a no-go.

Midwest-fag here. I LOVE cowboy boots (shit kickers if you will) and agree that they are surprisingly comfortable, especially when worn in. However, in my experience there are two big scenarios where you want to change them out for more conventional boots: A) If it is extremely cold, they aren't for ice fishing or hunting B) Uneven surfaces, the heel doesn't provide the best of support most times. Also ice or slick grass can be a pain. However, in most cases I love a good pair of cowboy boots. Ariat guy myself. If the heel is a bit much go for roper-style. I'm only 5'11'' and admittedly like the heel for a little height boost.

Same here. I walk through anything with my boots. For me it's about function. As I am also 5'11", I do appreciate the slight height boost to get me out of the 'king manlet' zone.

Cowboy boots = fedoras? If you were from my part of the country you would see how that wasn't at all true. I don't consider them workwear as I use steel toe boots when doing labor and farming but he cowboy boot is pretty much the equivalent of business casual where I'm from. Its what you wear out ranging from picking up girls at the bar to funerals. Or just walking the prairie. The heel and ankle support issues is kinda moot when the land is flat as it comes.

All western boots have that kind of heel. For stirrups and looking taller. They aren't so bad for casual walking, but they would seriously suck for hiking with, I can tell you.

OP, one type of boot does not work for everything. I also love wearing my Ariats and Wranglers, but I think you should look into a pair of lace-up boots, like the lumberjacks wear. It will still be cool.

They are horrible boots for snow unless you buy one of those heavily treaded work/western hybrid boots.

Love em! Funny mine got that same drip mark (from drinking originally). Ended up hitting em with some mink oil to try and blend in the mark, now theyre a lot darker, I don't really like it. Haha anyone know how to restore R.A.T. Boots to their factory finish? Oh and don't patronize me about cosmetics on a combat boot, it's not a big deal, more of a preference. Thanks ahead of time.

Best thing is to go with a waterproof boot to begin with.

That being said I've used mink oil for years. Restores the finish and helps waterproof. I use it on my ariats and my cabelas ropers.

Obenaufs is also a great thing to use.
