The whole thing fucked his life up. It wasn’t some lighthearted adventure like Bill Murray had. He only began to come to terms with it when he stopped “mental health treatment” and went with it. Normally that would be going full schizo but in his case it wasn’t.
The most insane part was how detailed the drawings were. Like he drew things that would have otherwise been mundane, a lot of which I’d forgotten about because over a decade had passed. He drew the gas station we all took a trip to after tubing. How would he even know what it looked like? It’s an hour and a half from where we lived, way out in the sticks. The cabin was drawn exactly how I remembered it. There was a swing set near the river bank that I’d forgotten about. The homemade fireworks that didn’t work. My girlfriends yellow and black striped bikini. A bottle of banana red Mad Dog 20/20. It was like a fever dream.
He drew some stuff that I didn’t remember, like some bros heading off to get firewood, a felled tree behind the property that some people carved initials into, a stuffed jackalope… I contacted some others that were at the party and was able to piece everything together.
