BUT there are a few national forests in East Texas that do allow fires as long as there's not a drought. I'm hoping to get a few friends to head out, as I've never been to one and it's actually okay to have fires.
I've had ground fires before at primitive sites, and once at Enchanted Rock a park ranger drove by in a golf cart thing while we were cooking breakfast, and he just waved. We clearly had a fire, and he clearly didn't care.
