Bear? I mean if you encounter a cougar it’s already a bit too late.
Other than grizzly or mama bears, bears are pretty skittish

cats usually pounce from the rear, side, or above. at the end you wouldn't see it at all. if you see one you still have a chance to survive, but you are a stalking target

Which one would I rather come across? Well bears and mountain lions are going to run away 99.9% of the time so it would be neat to see either of them.

Aren't there less than two dozen fatal mountain lion attacks in the last century? As lethal as an attack would be it really seems to be much more rare than bear attacks. I feel like my chances would be better, and people have successfully fought them off.

Least fucked to most fucked, I would put

Mountain Lion > Black Bear > Grizzly Bear > Polar Bear

Have run across many bears and one mountain lion. Bear every day. Mountain lion freaked me the fuck out at the time because you barely know they're there. Rattlesnakes have surprised me less. Bears run away from me.

also mountin' lion. bears are hungry dumbasses who have no interest or need to kill you before they eat you, they just break your bones and sit on your bleeding body while they casually rip your jaw off your head and munch on your liver with their friends over several hours. a mountin' lion least has manners enough to go for the jugular first and then once you're in a better place they drag you into a ditch to feed

Same. Run across black bears almost every hike in my neck of the woods. Deer make me more nervous than bear, I've had deer charge me, never a bear.
I had one run in with a lion while mountain biking. Scared the shit out of me, I spotted her trying to sneak up on me while taking a break, had a staring contest for what felt like an hour before she wandered off.
I also learned that I have a vertical leap to rival an Olympian when a rattler struck out at my bike and got stuck in the spokes.

Stastically speaking, any bear is much more likely to attack a hiker or someone sleeping in a tent than a mountain lion.
Almost all mountain lion attacks are on people who were on mountian bikes, people who were trail running, ran away from the mountain lion and children.
Bears on the other hand are definitly going to fuck you up if you get between a sow and her cubs while hiking. Mountain lions don't have a reputation for attacking like this and usually keep their cubs in a den.
