Obviously maintaining that 1k average over 10+ miles is more demanding than doing a shorter trail with the same 1k per mile average. But even shorter routes can feel as strenuous as some of the big climbs when they exceed 2k feet/mile. Around 2.5k feet per mile (> 45 degree slope) is when it starts to feel like real climbing.
