An other philosophical point i would like to make is that you ought to spend your money on the things that allow you to be happy, rather than save it in fear. If you need the gear it will be more valuable than the money ever could be.

Nah, me too anon. Started planning a trip and after doing heavy research, I almost had a panic attack because I didn't realize how expensive the equipment would be. After doing even more research, I found some compromises and such. Took the plunge and just went through with it. Check thrift stores and for people selling their old gear online. Like >>2447299 said, it doesn't need to be done all in a single sitting. Found a merino wool sweater for 32 bucks at a thrift store and a thermarest pad online for 80. Cheap? No. Relative to buying brand new, absolutely. Camping with comfort isn't going to be cheap but it also doesn't have to be thousands of dollars. Ease into it, man. It'd be dumb to go all in and then realize you don't even like it.

Basically this. Gear doesn't lose value to you, while your local currency definitely can. A tent will always be a tent, but a Euro or whatever can be worth nothing if the economy crashes. Get your stuff as you need it, buying one thing at a time.

At least you have your own oil and other raw materials in the US. In germany for example we outsource literally everything. Oil and gas (we don't do fracking here but we gladly buy fracking oil and gas) and hydrogen (from canada).
I am somewhat worried about the future.

The US isn’t a third world country. They don’t have tent cities in third world countries. The cops run them off. They have to build their shanties somewhere else, not under overpasses and on sidewalks in the middle of town. And they don’t have shambling heroin hobos in third world countries either. They get arrested for causing trouble/being a nuisance. The agalitarian “equal protection under equal law because all people are equal” nonsense doesn’t exist in a third world country either, which offers at least some restraint on violent crime.

I read a lot of stories of people that went in overprepared and spent a lot of money on things they didn't need, so I just went around my local area that I already know well with the bare minimum and if I found myself wishing I had something I wrote it down and bought it when I got back.

I still haven't bothered to venture out of the area I know though, I'm poor as shit.

But yeah, you should be going to a gym anyway. I ran a MeetUp group, and even dudes in their 20’s are only good for 8-10 miles if all they do is play video games all day.

I have a step up routine that I as going to start in its own thread because it helped me a lot, but /out/ is anti-exercise, with most staying explicitly to “just walk around your neighborhood.”

I don't know if I can cut it down even further. In fact I'll probably have to add more stuff that I didn't think about. My back and neck are super fucking sore though, I think I should try tomorrow so I'm more clear-headed about my chances.

They’re either super minimalists in nice summertime weather (such as California) or, more than likely, just lying.

If you’re serious about dropping weight, make a complete gear list and post it. People will critique and at least give you ideas of what you can leave or easily (and cheaply) swap out.

A budget mitigates concerns around money. If you decide "my regular expenses are x, I need to save y, and I need to invest z". Then what's left is what you can spend. You can decide how much you need to feel safe. Then you aren't worried about spending because you know what your discretionary income is.

I'm OP and I solved this issue by creating a new account for excess money that I want to keep in case things go south. I still have my other account with all my money that I can basically spend/invest.
This actually helped and allowed me to be a bit more willing to spend money.

For me it's mostly that I'm a poorfag.
But I kinda know the feel, I plan on buying gear and doing trips and whatnot and then just stop planning because "That's too much money.", the really bad part is that I then spend as much or more on random cheaper shit. (e.g.: instead of spending 150€ on a tent, I end up spending 150€ on five 30€ items that I don't really need right now)
