I use a small 6" hacksaw instead of a hatchet because I'm afraid of hurting myself. I was thinking of upgrading to a good folding saw. Are hatchets really better than saws?

This doesn't take into account the size of the saw. A silky big boy will shit on a 2k 700mm axe. A silky katanaboy will shit on every axe in terms of raw cutting speed.

if you get a folding saw for /out/ just make sure its a curved one unless for specialized uses. they are better cutting low or high, and flat saws for cutting chest height. curved winds up being the most versatile /out/, usually. https://www.amazon.com/Corona-RS-7245-Folding-7-Inch/dp/B0007LXTPA
the 7" is 6.8oz and the 10" is a little under 10oz iirc

OP, hacksaws are for cutting metal; Notice the tiny teeth?

If you’re going to use a hand saw, get one that’s specifically made for camping. They’re light, they’re cheap, and won’t take an hour to saw through a 1” tree limb

The metal neck come in very handy when splitting difficult pieces of wood. Modern hatchets lack this feature, and it really reduces its usefulness

Safety is a perfectly good excuse for using saws instead of axes for cutting. Axes are just inherently dangerous to use. They're not like knives which function in a more predictable way. You can only cut yourself with a knife if you're a retard, not so much with an axe. You can minimize the danger but you can never be completely safe from accidents. However a small hatchet is everything a large knife would like to be. They're amazing tools and can do a lot of stuff that other tools can only do at 50%

I'll be the odd guy out. Hatchets (mid size) can be deadly. Especially if you are stupid. Short ones are a little o.k. and are cruiser length Axes ( also deadly because of glancing into your legs...just less so). A machette is best because you can use a blocking stick in your off hand.

For a saw, if you do not want a folder or prefer something cheap, a small carpentry saw is great. The dollar store or Harbor Freight have them. I bought a dollar store one to make some cabinet scrapers from and I liked it enough to keep it. Not a fune cut but for woodcraft o.k..

Some saws perform way better than others. Especially if you use the right blade for the right task(wet tree vs dry tree, etc). Agawa Boreal is very good, haven't tried Silky.
