Unless you're felling trees, the pocketboy is plenty long.

What a terrible analogy. If I wanted a bigger dick, there's nothing I can do about it.
If I wanted a bigger saw, I would've just bought one.
A 5" folding saw does everything I require a folding saw to do. Anything bigger just adds bulk and weight.

There are times when a bigger saw is desirable. But those are also the times when I bring a bowsaw instead of a folding saw.
Choosing the right tool for the job and all that.

Okay, yeah. But that means carrying around a bigger saw. Why not just bring a big knife, unless you're cutting through some proper logs with a diameter somewhere between "too hard to hack through with a knife" and 10 inches?

Not much generally. Even cheap Chinese ones are good. You can hardly go wrong with a folding saw, and even then, the best ones are only slightly better.

I had a Corona Pruning Saw that served me well for some time I now have a Bahco Lap. It depends on your needs for myself they were often dead weight depending on environment. Look for something that cuts on the push and pull stroke.

This. Folding saws are pretty awesome. However, you have to know how to use them properly (as with any tool), as the blade can be easily dented when pinched. For my out/ related use, felling samller diameter green trees for bow staves, I bring a 10" pull stroke pruning saw with large teeth along that cost me 20 bucks and has replaceable blades.

I'ed definately recommend it for that task. Its smaller and faster that a bowsaw, requires little effort and is also pretty silent (no giveaway "chop, chop, chop" sound of an hatchet / axe).

I'm happy with it.

It's a tiny bit cheap feeling but it was cheap, and the bits that matter seem to be plenty good enough for the money. I like it.

As the other anon said, green is a bit of an annoying colour when trying to remember where you put it down.

A decent modern pack, for a week or longer innawoods, should contain:

I seem to get a feeling off this board that if you can't survive for a week outdoors with nothing but a loincloth and a mora you're not /out/ enough; I don't understand it. We're in a modern age. Carry what the fuck you want and what the fuck you need. It's pleasure, not survival, 90% of the time.

Yeah, I can see it. Thanks guys. I have only one /out/ experience with cutting wood and staying in one place. Most of my trips are in a national park (burning the wood is illegal) and we're hiking all day (so any extra tool adds weight). But if you're sitting in one place and making bows and a fire... Certainly faster than an axe.
