PU (polyurethane) tarp storage

No.2450260 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
How do you store your tar/rain fly/whatever when you're at home?
I've heard lots of lore, but I'm only aware of two concrete things:
1. PU tarps should always be kept dry in storage to reduce mold (and maybe hydrolysis)
2. PU tarps should be kept in cool environments to reduce thermal decomposition
I've heard various memes about how they should be "allowed to breathe" and whatnot, but why? Is it bad for the tarps somehow if I pack them in a box with some fresh silica packets and keep the box in a cool place?
For example, could background PU decomposition products accelerate decay? e.g., some ester/amine reaction? O-chem isn't my strong suite, so if anybody can inform me on this, I would greatly appreciate it.
