Need a shell layer since my Marmot percip started leaking. from anything more than a light drizzle. Now that we get the after Christmas sales, what do you guys think I should get?

Main concerns are breatheablity and water protection

Goretex vs ProShell vs E-Vent??

I'll try to nikwax the fucking thing... see what happens. Don't want to spend anymore money right now but I'd rather get something on sale rather than wait a few months to buy the same thing full price

Cleaning is just as important as Nikwaxing - they sell double packs of tech wash and reproofing stuff. I generally reproof every 3 washes.

If you do decide to go for a new jacket though, just remember that the performance of event is much dependent on it staying clean compared to goretex.

But why would cleaning fix the leaks? Seems more like this is a solution for the dwr rather then the shell. I tried a shower test after that and it was the same. The leaks in the arms are probably due to the cuff seams not being sealed but I can't figure out why the back would leak.

Honestly, it was never breathable enough to be comfortable and that is why I want some feedback on event Goretex and Neoshell. Still I don't know how much i can trust either. Before the precip I had a Columbia jacket but that leaked in the shoulders. I don't want to buy a 200 jacket just to be disappointed again. Maybe I should just resign myself to getting wet and wear something like wool to keep warm anyway

The precip is a really poorly designed shell by marmot, it's really unfortunate because some of their gear is really good, not worth it to waste money on nikwax.
OR makes some really nice mountaineering shells. Go with mountaineering shells, they'll offer better h2o resistance v weight than some other jacket designs.

Doesn't really sound all that promising. Any specific shells that you experience with?
I've tried looking at army Goretex shells on fleabay but I'm too scared of knock off copies. Besides I don't want to walk around town in whatever shitty camo they have.

Any word on ems or rei shells?

Event breaths better than everything but requires more maintenance. Washing and cleaning. It does not come with a DWR finish.

I own an Outdoor Research Foray jacket, I can't say enough great things about. It has pit zips that run from the top of your armpit all the way down the length of the shell it's nuts. Also a plus that the Gortex layer is bonded to the fabric.
Forgot to mention that it's an athletic cut. Tons of movement, but not baggy. It also never leaves me exposed while I'm stretching out. I wear a medium and I'm 5'8" 160lb

amazon actually has ridiculously good deals on some lesser known brands like 66 north. Or sierra trading post.

Im currently testing a c_change jacket and a gore active. The goretex definitely sucks for breathability

I wear my eastern mountain sport goretex almost everyday. Its pretty durable, super thin and has a some venting under the armpits and such.
