What pump water filters are you guys running that are reliable and easy to clean? I normally use a Sawyer Mini, but looking for something that can be used with a multiple group of people that doesn't take forever to pump water. What are you guys running that uses a pump to filter a faster amount of water quick?

If you had a group of four people, a single pump would have to be four times as fast to save time. The Katadyn pump claims 1L/minute while the Squeeze claims 1.9L/minute, so it’s actually slower than a Squeeze.

I switched to Aquamira earlier this year. Filters are a pain in the ass.

First Need XLE Elite if you want to flex on everyone for having the only consumer level portable water filter independently certified by DHS and EPA to filter viruses on top of everything else. Filters are pricey though, but last a very long time to balance that.

honestly I just use an old drinking bladder with sawyer mini, so whatever
something with a big opening for easy filling, my bladder opens like an envelope from the top so it's really handy even in shallow streams

Why spend time and energy going outside and walking when you can just sit at home and do nothing?

Your argument makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. One minute of moderate physical exercise doesn't even blip the radar as a downside in the context of hiking and camping.

Actually, it does make sense, IF you're a weekender who car camps in a paid lot fifty feet from the road. That is the only type of person who could possibly believe than running a pump for a minute is a notable hardship.

I don't give a shit which filter people use, don't care what I use, as long it's reliable and effective; I just find your argument to be utter trash.

Survivor filter pro is good enough to filter aids and monkeypoz out of the water, but it's slow as fuck. If you want it for multiple people you're going to have to go with a squeeze filter or gravity filter. Otherwise tell the freeloaders to bring their own filters.

squeeze and mini are on a totally different universe in flow rate, anon was giving you correct advice just not the entire thing. get a squeeze and make a gravity system. if you need 2 just bring 2. its gonna be less weight and less work than a pump style, which are sooper outdated even for big groups.
gravity hang adds like +15g to the dirty water bag + squeeze combo its nothing.
if you need to know how to make a gravity system for a sawyer just search it or there's guides on yt.

That isn't the post I was responding to. There may be good reasons to prefer gravity filters to pump filters, but I can and will still mock people who post bad reasons.

Also, all of this is generally made in China, so it can and will break. For example, the straps or the grommets on a gravity filter may tear, or the whole thing might be punctured.

So "it's not durable" isn't a great argument either, because anyone can shit out anecdotes. For all anyone knows, "B-but the pistons break!!" is a cope from gravity bag fags needing a justification other than being lazy as fuck.

Everyone knows that moving parts can break, just as everyone knows that plastic and rubber bags can abrade, get punctured, etc. What you need to do is be careful and not yank on your Chinese plastic like a mongoloid.

You can make a gravity filter yourself, sure. You can also fabricate or customize a pump gasketed for commercially available filters/iodine filters that will be much harder to break than Chinese plastic.

Anyway, I've been hiking and backpacking for 25 years, but yeah I'm sure you totally out-Rambo me and having been doing it better and for EVEN MORE years.

yeah the difference is one would require a machine shop the other one is a 30 second instructional where you just pop some holes in the corner of the bag with a hole punch, hang some thin spectra/whatever cord through it, add a small length of hose and maybe an adapter and you're done.

which one slowly wears out predictably over time vs which one catastrophically fails in the field? which one offers a backup filter in less weight than the other one which is SOL if the pump handle breaks? what happens to these materials as it gets colder?

I use an msr trailshot. I would get a guardian but it seems pretty heavy and bulky. So far the trailshot has served me well for 4 years now. I mostly drink out of alpine streams though.

I’ve got a trailshot, miniworks and a hyperflow. I use the hyperflow and have someone carry the trail shot for backup

It seems tedious and slow, easy for hands to tire

Yea I just plop the little dongle in and squeeze away. I am a frequent masturbator so my grip is good for about 2 liters. Sometimes it does get tiring and I two hand it. It would be a pain in the ass to do it for a lot of people. Still works fine in -15c and everything though.

I've had a Katadyn Hiker Pro for several years now, and used it when hiking alone or with a group of five for multiple days.

Simple to use, and quick. Only downside is weight, but thats a small price to pay for the added reassurance of quality water for drinking when in the mountains/woods.

Never had any of the plastic break, and long term storage with purification tablets are a breeze.

They really don’t take any longer than hand pumping if your filter is relatively clean. The only time I could see pumping being faster is if you’re alone and only need to fill one or two bottles. Even then, the time difference is marginal and I’d rather chill and take in the views than spending time crouched over pumping water like a madman. Gravity bags are also far less prone to fail. Really no reason not to use them.

You need to carry something extra or have trees to hang it off. And they drip slowly, when you can have about 10 gallons of water ready in less than 5 minutes while the gravity filters take hours just to get a couple gallons.
