I once set out on a dayhike at a popular walking/running trail near at the end of a suburb (lots of older folks, thots, guys with perfectly coiffed hair) and had two 30-something housewives following me not 5-feet behind jabbering and chattering about their god-awful bland, privileged, comfortable lives. I came to a fork and decided to wait, pretending I was admiring the view) until they chose to go one way (a path that ends at about 2000ft at an outlook) and then I went the other way (that continued for another 5 miles). I remember the moment I looked over to see them passing me by, they probably thought I was waiting to creep behind them, when all I wanted was to get as far away from them without being rude.
tl;dr sometimes having someone think you're creepy/rude is better than having them near you
