"Salmon" are members of the salmonidae family (which also includes trout, char, and several other species and subspecies) that are migratory/euryhaline (can survive in fresh or salt water), and that spawn only once before dying (the steelhead trout is referred to as a trout, and not a salmon, largely because it can spawn without dying).
To keep this fairly short and simple: Pacific mackerel species in particular are increasingly competing with salmon for prey species, and they are also increasingly predating salmon smolts (young fish <2 yrs).
That's because mankind is over-fishing sand eels, sprats, herring, shrimp, and squid, all of which are food sources for both mackerel and salmon.
