Solo camping for a beginner

I'm in the UK and I'm thinking that the Peak District would be a good place to go. I haven't been camping since I was 16 so I'm very much inexperienced. With this in mind, any tips and ideas would be greatly appreciated.

No, no one will care too much. Unless you camp in an active farm field within range of the farmer's house, I doubt they'd kick you off. Camping in the peak district is common.
If you're really paranoid just camp in some trees and don't light a fire.

Might get some better answers in >>2455144 but as the other anon said, no one really cares, just be careful about lighting a fire in certain areas if it's particularly dry. Don't camp too close to a trail, and it's probably best not to camp in a field with sheep. The worst that can happen is someone will tell you to move in the morning if you wake up particularly late and are near a farmer's house.

Is a tent preferable or would a tarp be better?

If you're new to camping then a tent is much more straightforward, just follow the instructions and you're done. Especially so if it starts to rain and you need a shelter fairly quickly. A tarp might be more versatile and cool, but requires a bit of knowledge and skill to get a good pitch. Try it out when you're more comfortable camping.

Peak district is full of bugs, especially in the evening. Best to just take a tent to protect yourself from them

whatever you choose, learn the dozen or so essential knots. tarp taut hitch, trucker's, marlin spike, bowline, prussik, etc

Do you think a day out hiking in the area would be advisable prior to camping? Just so I can get a feel for everything, scout the area for good spots and ensure I can navigate my way safely?

Depends how anxious you are about camping in the wild. Taking things in baby steps is generally a good idea, but I personally don't think it's a necessity. If anything just bring a headtorch and some warm clothes to hike back to your car in case you need to bail. Otherwise just go for it, take some notes on what went well and what didn't. Then the next time it'll be way more comfortable. Good luck!

You literally don't need to know any knots when pitching a tent. Plug the poles in the holes, stake out the guy lines and wa la - a tent.

You should be fine without, maybe find a good spot on an ordnance survey map, avoiding boggy areas. You can maybe look up some good spots online if you want to, but they might be crowded because obviously other people have looked them up too.

If you just have a tent there's no need for knots really, even when I've gone tarp camping I only needed two knots
