I got a pair of Korkers (River Ops Boa) a few months back.

They're fucking fantastic. It's like you've got creek tractors attached to your feet. The ratcheting wire cinch lace replacements are convenient, although I wonder how long they'll last before something fail on them.

Solid as a rock and protective, also comfy, but they are fairly heavy. You'll be doing the stomp and clomp in them for sure.

Yes, it works as good as they say... but it's fucking boring. It does feel like cheating. With that said, doesn't mean you're gonna catch big fish necessarily. You're gonna catch a ton of small ones until you get tired of bass fishing.

Either take your trout, or admire it quickly and release it. Don’t keep a 6 year old trout out of water mid summer for minutes on end (after playing it hard) just to get a retarded fishbrain photo before releasing it and sending it to hell. Water temps are still over 70 degrees. What is wrong with fishbrain users?

I’m thinking on making a trap and get some crayfish, any suggestions/commentaries? Picture related, found it near the street.

I’m in a small city in the mountains in Japan and I noticed that the creeks have these crayfishes, apparently these are an invasive species. There are lots of fishes where it is deeper, it is used in rice farms and other stuff and there are frogs and dragonflies, both sensitive to pesticides so I guess the water is pretty clean. A typical summer activity for kids is to pick those by using some dried squid on a string and slowly drag it so the crayfish will come out of the water holding the bait so I guess it should be ok to fish those but I could be wrong.

I never lay traps because it's faster to wade into the creek, start flipping rocks (not flinging them and destroying the biosphere, but just lift and lower), and then grab them yourself, or net them with a large aquarium net. Of course, it's more active work.

I once considered breeding them in tanks, but then I read that not only are they super territorial (which I expected) and cannibalistic, but pregnant females must be separated from other crayfish, or the other crayfish will snack her eggs right out from under her.

If you do get a trap, I know enough to tell you to make sure the trap hole isn't too big or too small for that species, not only so that they can get in but not out, but also so that undesired species don't get in.

I'm fairly sure any slightly off bit of meat will work for baiting the trap.

This is the place. I took that photo, very shallow. If it's anything like my topwater lures and crankbaits, nothing. I did have some luck with a tiny little jerkbait (2" max) with the world's smallest diving bill, though.

Cletus, Carla Jean, Cletus Jr., and Lil' Tater done caught 'em all out muh local little lakes, it's shit but it is what it is. And it ain't me, because when I drive further (or hike deep innawoods) I get more fish than you can shake out of a Japanese supermarket.

There are, no doubt, objectively better wading boots than Korkers in a one-sole, one-piece option (although the Korkers are still very good, especially in the toughness and protection category). You always sacrifice something for versatility, and weight is definitely one of those things, since you need attachment points and a pull-tab to swap soles.

However, the ability to get out of the stream, switch soles, and then walk for miles while saving the felt's durability, or just go with rubber in winter when felt will take on water and freeze, with one pair of boots is great.

And when you do wear out the felt soles, you simply order more (or have some stockpiled). Not saying you can't get traditional boots refurbished, but it can be a pain in the ass.

I keep them in my trunk (always after sterilizing and completely drying, of course) at all times along with some Chota hip waders, a tenkara rod, a tiny little 2 wt fly rod, and my diminutive bare basics sling pack (also water and foil retort bags of trail mix), just in case I need to pull over and fish at any time.

Some tweaker stole my simms freestone boots recently and I wandered into a Patagonia outlet by chance (and they happened to be running a crazy sale by chance) and I picked up a pair of the Patagonia x Danner Foot Tractor Sticky Rubber Wading Boot for $170. The quality is insane, and by far the most stable, grippy vibram soles I’ve ever felt on a freestone. 100% would recommend checking out if anyone has access to an outlet store. Just subscribe to the newsletter for their sales because most people are shopping for their garbage clothes. The boots are awesome and made in the US too. Danner can resolve them too.

You buy the whole piece with the ceramic insert already in it
You have to cut the epoxy coated strings that hold it on then use thread to re wrap it then some epoxy to hold it all together
Not as hard as it sounds but wont be super pretty

That's my biggest gripe with fishing in the 21st century. The population of the U.S. has nearly doubled since the 1950s when our fathers and grandfathers were fishing, and fishing is as popular as ever, if not more so.

And state wildlife agencies have gotten lazier and more useless.

What does this have to do with senkos? Well where I live, green speckled senkos work great on bass (with drop shot rigs primarily, although I've had luck with wacky and Texas rigs), but almost nothing else does because fish are so fucking pressured.

Mainly a problem at very accessible, small local lakes but of course that's where all my fishing buddies always want to fish.

lads i'm getting a second 7' MF set up to bring with me along with my 7' MF Fenwick and Pfluger Supreme 3000. I've decided on a St. Croix Premier and Shinamo Stradic although i'm wondering if I should go with the 2500 stradic or the 3000. I'm pretty new to fishing. I was given a medium light and medium heavy rod. I fish freshwater. Mainly off of a dock or on the bank. Last year I primarily used I believe a rapala f5 minnow. Caught good sized bluegill, crappie, large and a small mouth. This year, no dice. I've tried Texas rigged worms. I got a pack of inline spinners to try out, a nibble here and there. Threw a few different crank baits. Tried beetle spins. I gave night crawlers a try but the baby bluegill eat them. I'm not sure what to try now, besides moving spots.

Is there any techniques or style that I should focus on learning?

If you want to catch fish in pressured waters, you have to get reaction bites. Burn small fast-moving lures near cover and they will be more likely to hit it. If you want to fish finesse style soft plastics, downsize to crappie sized ones. Small craws, 3" wacky rigs, things like that. If you give pressured bass a chance to look at the bait, they're just gonna look at it and say "nah." You have to bring out that instinctual urge to chase.

2500 vs 3000 depends entirely on line you plan to use. if you plan to use thicker line like straight mono/flouro, and 10 or 12lb, go for the 3000 since it will hold more line. If using braid to leader, or stright 8lb mono/flouro, 2500 holds plenty of line for that. It's just the same reel with a bigger spool on the 3000.

downsize everything. get a mepps grab bag in the smallest size(00,0,1). 1/8oz crankbaits. small topwater poppers like the rapala ultra light pop. I've probably raised my catch by 400% this year by downsizing everything, especially in summer where it seems the hardest to catch fish in my area. caught multiple pb of different species on tiny lures.

I get a ton of largemouth and smallmouth on 5" dingers, sink-o's or whatever you want to call your plastic worms. Change your casting speed from slow-medium-fast. Give it a little jigs and wiggles and if you aren't catching switch up colours. Honestly my favourite way to catch bass can't remember the last time going out and not catching a handful.

I recently got into freshwater fishing as well and have a ML rod. Finesse fishing for bass is really fun and not difficult to master. Grab some soft plastics, primarily worms like senkos or dingers or biospawn baits and texas rig them weightless. Cast em out, let them sink, hop em along the bottom and reel in your slack. Don't get crazy with your retrieve speed, aim for slow-medium. The slow fall of a plastic with good action will get bass, even now in the heat of the day in summer I catch a handful of decent sized largies more or less every time. Fall/Spring is a better time to experiment with a wider variety of baits/lures because the bite is better. You should also definitely get stuff for a ned rig.

Well... the results are in, after the first fucking cast in a pressured body of water. Caught a big crappie. The average crappie I catch in this body of water is stunted and I've caught tons of them, so this is rare. Another success in the downsizing of lures experiment. Gonna see what this 2.5in jerkbait does at other places this weekend. He fought harder than a 4lb bass and almost got hung up in a downed tree on 6lb line.

Can someone recommend a solid fishing backpack? Looking for something small but big enough to hold 1 or 2 3500 tackle cases, soft plastics, and a few extras like pliers, etc. I also do a lot of kayak fishing so any waterproofing or resistance is nice.

I've been using this as my "quick access" pack when I'm on the canoe. Pliers on a bungee attached to the front patch loop. The main compartment perfectly holds a Plano 3500, and the smaller pocket will probably hold a 3400.

mepps grab bag is an extremely good bang for your buck. way cheaper than buying them individually or in the packs they sell normally. no, you do not need an ultralight setup. most are between 1/12oz-1/6oz in the smallest sizes. if you factor in a small barrel swivel on the line in front of them, most are around or right over 1/8oz, which is good for most medium light rods. just make sure to use lighter line. 8lb mono seems to be about the heaviest you would go for the smaller spinners. pic rel is the rod I use for my small mepps, 8lb mono.

Yes, just make sure to match the correct worm to the correct size and weight of hook. This is maybe more important for Ned rigs than any other kind of plastic rig.

For example, some of them are designed to graze the bottom while their tails float up enticingly, but too light of a hook and they won't sink; too heavy and it doesn't work properly.

I used to, but that creates a lot of bulk, and fumbling with them on a kayak got annoying. I'm not buying one of those gay plastics binders, either. I want it all in one tackle bag.

Last year, I went through my Dad's old storage building, and found two (brittle and bent) tackle boxes full of plastics that I used in the late 1980s/early 1990s.

The worms are still fine, even though the boxes are aged and warped up.

So I know from experience that it's fine to keep plastics in a tackle box, since I've been doing it since before you were born.

And here they are, with some bonus unopened Cremes from Noah's Ark.

some soft plastics will not melt in a tackle box easily, but every single one that I've come across will leech their color onto the others. for that reason, I keep mine in the sealable bag they come in. I have quite a bit of good grubs but they're all kind of custom colors now from leeching onto eachother.

Other plastics catch fish just fine, but they can be stored any which way you like, don't dissolve if you put a different kind of worm in their container by mistake, and don't melt when it gets slightly hot.

Do it mold injectors are the bait maker's standard for injectors. Best to invest in a cheap microwave, heat gun, temp gun, pair of gloves and shit ton of pyrex measuring cups. Also getting some worm oil wouldn't hurt giving flavor to your baits.

Welcome to the wonderful world of kayak fishing. I do it all the time, far more than I'd like to actually, but my fishing buddies insist on it.

Here are my and one of my buddy's kayaks ready to go a month or so ago at Hungry Mother State Park in VA.

Okay, so the first thing you need to know is that if you paddle all the way to the other end of the lake, even if there's no wind the whole way there, it will blow in out of nowhere and you'll have to paddle into the wind the entire way back to the launch.dock you came from.

The next thing to know is that if you do remember to bring your anchor(s), the wind won't blow at all, and you'll sweat profusely and be very uncomfortable. If you forget your anchor, as I usually do, every time you cast into some nice rip-rap or cover the wind will blow your ass halfway across the lake.

As a serious answer, you can make your own anchor trolley system. I know some redneck who made one out of two half-gallon milk jugs filled partially with sand, paracord from Walmart, and cheap fasteners and eye bolts, and it works astonishingly well.

Size 8 Aberdeen should catch just about anything in freshwater with the exception of micro species. If you end up gut hooking the fish, switch to a size bigger.

you just have to research and learn hook sizes and types. if you get the wrong type for the application, it could result in lots of swallowed hooks. are you fishing with a bobber? size 6 or 8 is good for panfish species.

I was a lake recently and had to do exactly that during a bluegill frenzy (could see 12+ of them by the dock with the naked eye). I had two plastic containers of meal worms and red worms, and it was like a buffet down there.

Never did catch one, no matter how closely I threaded the bait onto the hook (sometimes with just the head wiggling off the barb) nor how small the hooks, though I had run out of extremely tiny baitholder/Aberdeen hooks, so I could only go but so small.

For bass, get some plastic worms, senkos or dingers are good choices. Texas rig them (I prefer weightless) and cast out into an eddy or anywhere the current isn't ripping. Look for cover and structure and cast around that too. Let your bait sink to the bottom and "hop" it back towards you, making sure to reel in slack as you go. The trick is when you hop it to just let the bait do it's thing and let it fall back to the bottom, the bass usually go for it on the fall. For color in murky water, something brighter may work better. Don't set your hook like a bass bro, a simple, sturdy lift of your rod will usually be enough to set the hook. I was losing a lot of bites because I was pulling the bait right out of the fish's mouth instead of letting them get a good hold of it.

Same. It's sure as shit not less expensive, especially when you consider your time spent, even if you're quite fast. Cheaper to buy some decent ones from one of those obscure "real" online fly shops (not Amazon or a huge outlet), but they just aren't as good as what you can do with some time and practice.

It's one of those telescoping Zebco things. 2.8:1 spinnner. I usually use a bobber with a rubber minnow+ white jig head and a split shot (not sure what size). Just tried T-rigging minnows but the water is too choppy right now on the river.

Yesterday I threw 11 smallmouth bass onto the bank. It feels good to be putting these trash fish were they belong. I accidentally let 3 of them get away while unhooking which sucked. get a nice light trout rod, you won't regret it. you will have a much easier time casting small spinners, controlling their position in the current, feeling strikes, and maintaining pressure on the fish. you will actually have more turning force and keep more tension on a fish running towards you if the rod can easily bend and stay bent

the bass rod is a totally different tool for twitching jigs and drop shots, chucking stick baits, and other things that your noodly trout rod will suck at. you don't have to spend a lot of money but you'll be really sad if you don't get the right tools for the job

It's marketed as a Crappie rod, so it casts light lures well, yet has good backbone since Crappie can get several pounds in weight. The rod beside it is also an excellent rod for targeting both small species and large ones, it's even more stout than the Crappie rod, but the trade-off is that 1/8oz lures are the minimum I throw on it. Therefore, it would be the better "bass rod" but also not the best "trout rod" compared to the other one, unless you are throwing a minimum of 1/8oz lures. Like I said, caught the bigger fish on the lighter rod so far ironically. I recommend these rods since they are so much more versatile than most.

The bass are very simple animals and have no idea, nor any way of conceiving of the idea that they're pest animals/an invasive species.

Nothing really. Just makes it a tad easier to cast accurately since you can immediately thumb the spool. But you can do this on a spinning rod, just feather the spool with your casting index finger extended and touching the spool or cupping it with your off hand.

And tbqh it’s easier to do that technique with lighter lures than heavier ones. So there’s really not too much of a point to. BFS bait caster.

Japanese also are making BFS spinning rods. They’re just 5-6 feet long with a reel seat that makes doing the technique I described above easier.

I will say BFS bait casting is extremely fun. See the Enjoy Fishing YouTube channel, but he also sometimes does spinning BFS lol.

In some ways, baitcasters are in the same boat with fly rods: The entry-level models are literally more difficult and frustrating to use.

In the case of fly fishing, the rod itself most affects a beginner's experience, whereas with baitcasters it's obviously the reel.

A good (enough) Shimano baitcasting reel costs around $200 just for the reel, and a good rod with sensitive action about the same, and someone not yet used to baitcasters will catch more fish with a $30 Zebco Walmart special that even comes pre-spooled with line.

Once you do learn to fly fish or use a baitcaster, then you'll be better equipped to use cheaper ones because you already know what you're doing.

They are, but an excellent rod and reel allow an expert fisherman to make the best use of his expertise.

A concert pianist can play grandma's cheap old piano fantastically, but he's still going to do way better with a concert piano.

I will say this though, good gear often helps newbies as well, because it's smooth and well tuned instead of janky and cheap.

Fixed-line poles, like tenkara, keiryu, and seiryu rods/poles (or traditional Sicilian poles, or a stick with a line tied on), arguably require the most skill in terms of technique if you wand to catch anything. There's no ripping a spinner through the weeds or sinking a worm there, you have to present the fly exactly right (or the fly will bounce, or the leader bunch up), you have to drift it naturally (mostly because fish go after prey based on real physics and optics, and they'll flat-out miss their target if it's going unnaturally slow or fast), and twitching the rod to impart movement to the fly that resembles a struggling insect without messing up takes a very light touch.

Can fish perceive damage? This is a scientific consensus. Fish can perceive damage and produce complex response to it and so does bugs and even plants.
Can fish suffer? Now this is complicated. Unlike the general interpretation of pain strictly speaking pain is not just the perception of damage, it is the emotional response to it. Pain can occur even without tissue damage also certain conditions and situations can dissociate those two so a person can perceive damage but not carry the negative emotional response to it. In some cases for a reason or another the emotional response is blocked so the person perceives the no ious stimuli, react to it but does not suffer from it. This is why it is so complicated, the fish is fully capable of perceiving harmful stimuli but they lack the neocortex humans have to process emotions like we do, great apes almost certain feel them in a very similar way we do, other mammals seems to use different parts of the brain for that, fish brain is just too primitive so they shouldn’t be able to yet plants lack a brain entirely but then we found out that they not only can perceive damage but also react from it, learn from it and still remember it long after the stimuli is gone.

When you go to cast a baitcaster and when you reel in a baitcaster, they're two completely different grips you do on the rod. You have to move your hands anyway to go from one grip to the other, and it's basically the same time as switching hands.

Unless you're one of those weird fuckers who holds it by the reel with both hands when casting and not even using the butt end of the rod for more leverage on the cast. I see that a lot and it's the dumbest.

because American boomers started the trend. watch Japanese fishing videos, including ones where the engineers of the reels are showcasing them, 75% of the time they are left-hand retrieve. granted, there are lots of Japs who emulate American bass fishing culture and use right retrieve reels though. just like with a spinning setup, you can choke up on the reel however you feel comfortable, some people like between different fingers than others, and with a baitcaster that's left retrieve(for a right handed person) it allows you to choke up on the reel with your grip further if you want to. it's literally designed that way, but american bass boomers don't care. luckily, left retreive reels are easier to come by and are often on sale thanks to this, but if you look at the JDM market, it's the opposite.

The study I read that "proved" fish do suffer was slightly flawed IMO. They stipulated that lasting behavioral changes after injury indicated that suffering was felt by fish, which makes sense to me. However the researchers chose to damage an area near the gills. Even the most primitive organisms will avoid potentially lethal damage. anyone who says that fish don't feel pain are retarded. every living creature feels pain to a degree, at least animals. they're just tougher than us and can't bitch about it. with that said, some creatures probably feel it "differently" or to varying degrees, but that's more invertebrates. fish still hit lures after missing half of their lip due to instinct. it's like waving a string in front of a cat, they just can't help it.

Like I've said, if that is a warmouth, it HAS to be a hybridxgreen. I have NEVER caught a warmouth out of that pond, only lots of green sunfish. there are no dark lines on it's face, and note the orange trimmed fins, classic green sunfish. lastly, all of the fish in that pond are dark, the water is very tannic.

Because back in the day, there were a lot more fish and they'd bite a much wider variety of lures and plastics. That's partly due to the fact that the population of human beings in the US has doubled since the 1950s, partly because so many fishing areas have been made "accessible" so that morbidly obese welfare-scroungers can park their mobility carts at the dock all day, and part of it, probably, is that plastics have had to get more realistic because fish have "learned" about plastics (through natural selection, not consciously).

Part of it too is probably human impact on fish populations: Mexicans, Chinese, blacks, and rednecks filling up three Lowe's buckets illegally, muh climate something or other, introduction of invasive species, etc.

There's a reason why Ned rigs, wacky rigs, Carolina rigs, and so on are all the rage these days. It's way, way harder to fish for us (in most locales) than it was for our grandfathers and great-grandfathers.

for zander perch and pike you could aslo try different times. Dusk and dawn seem to do better unless the weather is really shit. Zander have great eyes and don't like it if the visibility is too high, i.e. water too clear or sun shining right down

I never know what size to fish, the FT minnow you see on the pictures netted me some tiny catches, same for a little spintail, but I only caught one big pike on a shitty amazon crankbait that's a bit smaller than the perch I posted. Yes, go to a stream instead.

I don't know how the fuck anyone's supposed to answer you properly without knowing where you live, but if it's hot out still, either get up at 4:30 AM and start fishing with small inline spinners as the sun comes up, or buy a boat and troll the bottom of the lake with four or five rods midday.

If it's fall, forget about it. Go to a stream. Fishing for trout in lakes (the ones I'm familiar with, that is) in fall instead of going to a stream is like walking past a whorehouse to go look for a hooker in a church.

In all seriousness, if they aren't feeding topwater, minnows on sinker rigs work well. That's only if you can find any not at the middle-bottom of the lake, mind you (get that boat).

Alternatively, even when it's hot they'll shelter in an around docks for some reason. Guess the constant shade keeps it cool enough for them.

Well I'm about ready to call this fishing season a bust for me. Not because I didn't catch fish but because I just didn't get out enough and now it's almost too late. I started a new job and bought a house this year and that kept me off the water for months. I'm finally able to get out for NC flounder season but after that I'm probably gonna hang it up this year and organize my gear, upgrade some old stuff, and restock tackle for next year.

How do you guys make time for fishing when life seems to get in the way?

Unironically, get a real field guide covering the region in question. In many fish species, colors and patterns can differ wildly based on sex, age, season, stress levels, life cycle, and who knows what else and then small juveniles of large species can also be confusing.

Actually having a good reference of (and biologist-authored guide to) the various body and profile shapes, scale types and patterns, fin shapes and patterns, the fish's actual geographical range, and so on can help you much more in narrowing species down, far more so than Googling.

For years I struggled to identify more obscure species, just assuming they were "some kind of creek chub" or whatever.

i had something enormous try and snatch a bluegill off my line so i reeled in the blurgill, changed hooks, hooked the bluegill and got him bleeding a bit and sent him back into the spot. beast of a fish ripped off my 20lb leader. i feel embarassed about my knots. i should not havelost him with the line and hardware i used....now im bummed i potentially left a hook and line in that beast.

Well boys, I did it. Decided to splurge on a fly rod and reel that as a very new angler I probably have no right using. Douglas Sky G 6wt and Galvan Torque, will be used to primarily target sunfish and bass in nearby ponds with an occasional outing for trout in trips to W NC. Haven't fished in 5 months because I'm in the middle east on a bullshit deployment, figured I'd treat myself with the extra $ from being tax free.

All I have is youtube fishing videos and I think I know more about fly fishing than I ever did in the 4 months of owning the basic Orvis Encounter and going out every other day. Any other useful resources I can use in the last month here before I do some fall fishing every single day for two weeks in NC? Will be for sunfish/bash primarily.
