>>2457576Hiking is dangerous when you lack common sense about being outdoors. When you don’t ask yourself a few basic questions you can wind up dead.
Is it hot out and do I have enough water?
Am I familiar with the NSEW layout of the trail I am taking?
What time of day and what are the weather conditions?
What are some easy to remember landmarks in case I get lost?
Those few questions are sufficient to get you back home as long as something unforeseen doesn’t happen.
That being said I am blown away how easily people get lost or in bad situation. The town I live in Idaho has about 200 acres of mountain side with a large well marked trail system in it. I have had to lead multiple people back out to the parking lot. That being said I am surprised at these heat deaths in California. This one and that family last year. I have done 4 and 5 day treks in Utah and Wyoming in 80 to 100 degree heat with full pack and limited water but have never had an issue. I wonder if Californians are just naturally pre disposed to dehydration or something.
