It's simply a matter of how many times you have to go back and forth with the saw.
What I'm going to say is not correct on the details but covers the concept well enough:
A 10 cm thick piece of wood, with a 20 cm saw, in one go your saw can cover twice the thickness of the wood. A 30 cm saw would do 3 times the wood width in one push. (you probably already understood this idea, but the internet is full of people who don't understand basic concepts in life.)
From that basic principle you just choose what the fuck you value more, thicker wood and/or cutting faster or weight/bulk.
Me personally when I'm just fucking around in one of my 1-2 hour sessions clearing a bit of a trail/path just take a really cheap 300mm bow saw and a spare blade for it. It fits great on my 15L backpack. I rarely mess with anything thicker than 12cm or so (around 5 inches), works fine.
