Trail running shoes

Do you have any recommendations for a trail running shoe?

There's so many options out there I don't want to mess up my order. I'm just looking for a good all-purpose shoe, that can last me virtually forever. I'm not sure whether to look for waterproof, but I definitely don't want boots as I intend to go trail running with them.

What are y'all wearing? Do you like them? Any recommendations?

#1 thing that matters is the fit. try them on in person.
#2 thing that matters is how substantial the upper is. some trail runners have very minimal barely there mesh uppers, and some have more substantial uppers. neither one is better than the other, but they are very different and not interchangeable. minimal uppers dry very fast, substantial uppers are more protective and last longer.
everything else is either a binary 'good' or 'bad' with trailrunners.
things to avoid: gore tex or waterproof trailrunners. it doesn't work with the design of a shoe. only (properly designed) boots.
things to do: add a quick lace system to any trailrunners you buy. buy your trailrunners on sale last year's model to save 50% (they are consumables!)
i've been using saucony peregrine since they came out around 2010? 2011? because of the wide toebox and what i find to be a good balance between protectiveness and dry times. the outsoles are very aggressive and better than most, but there are better designed ones that exist. they're also cheap.

tl;dr is try them all on, ideally somewhere with an incline rock, find what brand(s) fit your foot the best and stick to them. the worst trailrunner in the world is better than the best trailrunner in the world if it fits your foot better imo. fit is what decides if you get blisters or not. i still keep moleskin and leukotape in my bag but i've gotten like..... one blister since i found the trailrunner and boot that works for me, over the course of 10yrs.

Got a pair of Scott and I'm quite happy with them. Never heard the brand before buying them, but I did because they fit best on my feet. So I agree with >>2458640

oh yeah also, op, when you go to try on shoes bring (or just buy @ the outfitter) the same socks you plan on hiking in. it makes a difference. if its your first pair ask the guys at the store or read online about how to size trailrunners, you want to size up by a certain amount for certain reasons and the incline rock helps you feel how they'll actually feel on trail (minus foot swelling)
if you get it dialed in you're almost immune to blisters.

Basically going to echo these replies, the fit is everything and definitely make sure you're going to try the shoes on in person (at the store, order online and return the pair(s) that don't work) with the socks you're planning to use:
I've been using Brooks Cascadias for 3 years off-and-on and they're great but I've had to size up/down due to Brooks' changing sizes and different usage. I now own a pair of Cascadias in 11 and 11.5 because the former are close to true to size while wearing thin- to medium-thick socks (a bit tight) and the latter are almost loose while wearing thick winter socks (I can tighten them up until they're true to size but only while wearing thick/cushioned socks). I used to wear a pair of Altra Lone Peak 5s, but the lack of support and the zero-drop were painful for me in steep inclines (mostly hike/backpack in CA-AZ-NV-UT-OK-MT-OR-WA-ID) despite wearing pretty low-drop shoes in everyday life. This knowledge came from years—literal years—of experience and trial-and-error, so you're just going to have to bite the bullet and accept that you're probably going to buy something that doesn't work for you somewhere down the road. I currently own 4 pairs of shoes/boots that are uncomfortable for me, and the only reason I know that is because I now know what IS a comfortable fit for my feet.

Surplus Bundeswehr trail runners are pretty great. Don't bother trying to find a waterproof train runner, if you want to actually run then they'll be miserable when it's hot out.
