neither the wolves nor the coyotes on that hunt are endangered in that area. most of the "two-man teams" in that hunt are father/son or hunting buddies, culling an over abundant predator population.

I was talking about a manageable population that can co-exist with the modern day reality of life there. that being said, I'd love if you had hard facts about populations that existed there before the propagation of ranching.

Game and fish counting stats can objectively prove the ability of humans to manage wildlife. it hasn't always been ideal but, they seem to have gotten the hang of it by now...

umm, there are abundant because of "Slow Elk" (read as cattle). for you, this isn't about getting rid of cattle though. this is about allowing wolf populations bloom until they starve. why not focus on getting rid of cattle? oh right, you'd rather first create a false dilemma based on starving wolves.

Hunting is probably the most humane way to take care of the overpopulation and will have the least unknown consequences. I can understand why people might be worried about reducing wolf populations back to endangered levels, but we can regulate hunting a lot better than we can regulate other methods of population control.

Wolves should be protected, and here's why:
There was a time in U.S. history when killing off predator animals was rewarded with money. This lead to the extirpation of grizzly bears, wolves, and other predators in many states. This was viewed as favorable. However, after massive losses of wolves, naturalists like Aldo Leopold observed mass shifts in the functionality of ecosystems. For instance, deer populations exploded and started to eat all new tree seedlings. With no predators to keep their populations in check, this lead to a severe lack of new tree growth and affected the density of the forest. Lack of dense forest cover is currently a major issue in maintaining popular hunting animals like deer and elk. There were also notable detrimental changes to waterways and the animal populations therein, but I'm too lazy to pull the info.

Cattle ranching is a hugely damaging industry. Lots of public lands (national forests, etc.) still reserve 50-90% of the grazing for cattle rather than for native grazing species. Cattle are so big and heavy, and ranchers raise so many at a time, that they DESTROY creeks. I can say this from working doing forest surveys. They erode the banks and widen the creek. This makes the water hotter and more shallow, which creates an unfavorable environment for fish, which a number of other species depend on. I have not seen any native species cause this kind of damage. So fuck cattle. They're an invasive species.

Instead of simply looking at the changes in the present, consider what has already been lost.
