>>2460141The chain just failed, it happens. They're under a lot of stress and production isn't perfect. Too much lubrication can make more shit stick to it, that's ture, bit it won't make it fail like that.
After you lube up your chain, just wipe down excess lubricant with a rag. You don't want your chain exterior to be completely dry either, because rust and all that.
A new chain is like $15, unless you're in need of high performance parts, which doesn't seem to be the case. I recommend KMC instead of Shimano.
You can also replace the link with a quick link, but you need a chain tool for that (which is a good investment and cheap as well).
