The availability of game and their hunting laws. They've recently started going more liberal, so their hunting laws are being challenged, but if you're a hunter it's a pretty legally-friendly state to the activity.

I know this is baut but I can't resist. Every state bordering california is better than california. Death Valley is the only redeeming factor and even then, it's only good because you might die there which is better than having to see the rest of california.

Depends on what you are looking for but the White Mountains have some really great hikes and alpine peaks. I haven't been in years but I never saw crowds except on Mt Washington.

these are all pretty good answers. I can say for a fact that NY, VT, NH, ME, TN, and NC have phenomenal spots. To a lesser extent Virginia if you like mountain shit and NJ/SC if you like water stuff

I've was born and raised in southwest Virginia, love the wilderness here and across the near borders in WVA, TN and NC, but I've also been to Maine many a time, and in terms of /out/ Maine takes the cake on this side of the country.
