My dad

Always taking us out fishing, shooting, and hiking. Spent most summers out on what we called, jokingly, Death Marches. But I loved them and they only made me stronger. Scouts did help me, Eagle Scout here

Originally got it from scouts, but quit back when I was 12 because it was a completely shit group.

Grew up innawoods in south central PA. Got the shit beat out of me by my scout troop (all the offenders are now in jail, coincidentally, for other reasons, and so are several other kids who didn't do anything), and it was always shitty and rainy when we went camping, so not there. Spent most of my childhood out, unsupervised, with probably only one friend and no cell phones.

Fuck fenced yards.

Parents. Dad was a field researcher for the California Department of Fish and Game and mom was a biologist who spent four summers doing research in the Sierra Nevada alone. They took me camping, hunting, and backpacking a lot, then I got into a scout troop that accepted gays and atheists and had a bunch of cool guys who brought weed on trips. We went backpacking every month and did all the high adventure bases. Plus I gained a new appreciation for nature after taking shrooms while hiking Catalina Island and and reading Kerouc and Transcendentalist philosophy.

Boy scouts. Tiger to Eagle, loved every minute. I was with a great troop that did camping trips just about every month, and camporees every season. We also did quite a few community service projects. Fortunately, but kind of sadly, there was another troop in our area that attracted all the weird kids so we always did fun stuff.

That's a shame I kinda had the same experience. I guess you could say that I was either in or right behind the last good generation of scouts in my troop. Painfully watched the troop be overrunned by winy kids and overbearing adults. By the time I got eagle I buggered out, just wasn't fun with the troop anymore. I stayed in scouts and did other stuff like National Youth Leadership Training. Boy that was fun

Not even twice. Never did innawoods activities. My troop blew. By 12 I knew more about innawoods than my troop slavedriver

I've always been a more outdoors person but my suburbanite upbringing coupled with my workaholic parental units didn't allow me much

Sorry dude. I guess compared to the popular crowd in highschool we were the weirdos, but I fit in there. At the time I even wished I had gone to more football games and parties, but looking back, I have no regrets. The only friends I still talk to from highschool are the ones I met in scouting and I learned so many great skills.

Not sure, I think I've always liked living things and the outdoors was where they tended to hang out. Joining a Cadet Corps let me see it from the camping and survival side as well, and it all added up to making me the sc/out/ I am now.

I've personally grown to hate the outdoors in Boyscouts. Each troop I joined was filled to the brim with assholes.
Began to recover when I joined a Seascout troop, and while that troop is no more I'm still increasing my love for going out through nature photography and hiking.
