If you don't already know, don't touch them. You need to have the knowledge of your local shrooms memorized before you should ever consider eating them. Find a mushroom gatherer in your area and learn from them first. No need to learn a trillion varieties. Learn 2 safe ones, and any lookalikes in your local area. Expand from there.

A friend taught me how to identify them. I don't know how I do it I just know which are good and which aren't because I spent so much time doing it with him we picked thousands together. It just either looks right or it doesn't.

To add to this, there are dangerous lookalikes which only look slightly wrong. Basically if it doesn't look perfect you don't touch it. You really need to be taught by someone. People talk about spore prints and shit like that to ID them properly we never did that. We hunted gold caps only gold caps which grow in abundance where I live and there were many lookalikes which had ever so slightly different gills.

Basically find someone who can do it or spend days if not weeks watching videos on the specific shroom you want to find. I taught a friend of mine how to find them and after awhile he could "feel" the shrooms. We would walk around until he got the feeling then stop and search, every time we would find a patch.

Nevertheless on the off chance you're not a lazy larper the only advice I have for you is too memorize 2 or 3 of the most common edible mushrooms and only eat those

Then I'd advise smell. Assuming you have at least some experience in mushroom picking so you know what an edible mushroom smells like. It's not a good way of saying if a shroom is edible but at least you can know when one is defo to throw away

If you don't have someone to teach you, just take a good 2022 mushroom picking guide with photos. Otherwise you'll never learn anything, faggot

Just memorize the 5 or so deadly ones, and the 5 or so edible ones with no deadly lookalikes in your area, and all the lookalikes of those edible ones. Most mushrooms fall into the "not deadly but discomforting to eat" or "inedible brick of bitterness" categories. Mushroom danger is vastly overstated, compared to foraging wild plants or berries.

You should only eat stuff you can POSITIVELY identify. This means not "I am sure it's not that poisonous mushroom" but "I am sure this is this edible mushroom". If eating something is a matter of survival, there's a test call the universal edibility test but 1) it takes forever 2) you should use it on something that is plentiful in the area and won't give you the shits if you eat a lot of it (even edible mushrooms do that).

95% of mushrooms you see, you are ignoring entirely and not even trying to identify.
