Anyone here done it before? What should I bring? I am already bringing:

Headlamp
Helmet
Spare batteries in multiple ziplocks
two spare flashlights
A large durable drawstring backpack
Trail runners
A wetsuit
A jacket
Compression pants and shirt to wear as extra warm layers
Piss bottle
Poop canister

Anything else I am missing?

Actually you’re only allowed to go through clubs (grottos)
There are multiple northern Virginia such as the dc grotto. Caving is actually pretty niche of a Harvey and a lot of the grottoes you’ll see the same people.

Yeah, I joined one of the northeast USA grottos. There are certainly grottos in the virginia area. Lots of good caves around there.

In theory you can go without being affiliated to a grotto, but it's better to join one for safety and to learn the locations of the caves.

I was in the spelunking club in high school so I know a good gear list. We never actually went spelunking but we talked about it a lot.

So basically you ill want a blanket. Nice big fluffy one. This is so you can wrap it around yourself once the your light batteries die and the darkness envelopes you. Stay warm that way while you wait to die, and also if you wrap it around your mouth your screams won't reverberate through the cave so much.

And wrap it on your ears to muffle the helpless cries of your fellow cavers who, less thoughtful than you, did not bring blankets to die in.

So that and be sure to wear comfortable clothes that you like. You are going to be wearing them forever basically. They'll dynamite the entrance to the cave after the tragedy so your flesh will rot away but the clothes will be on your bones forever.

There is no asphyxiation risk in 99% of caves, since there are thousands of unknown water passages to the surface and microscopic air pores as well. hypo/hyperthermia, falls, and drowning on the other hand are real dangers if you or your team are unfamiliar with a cave.

Pretty sure he's thinking of the Nutty Putty guy who got wedged in a vertical crevice and ended up basically asphyxiating to death.

Nah he died of blood flow to brain. It's a good idea to not enter downward squeezes head first. They think if he went feet first he would have been rescued, because the team would have more time to setup a new pulley. The guy was also 6' 200lbs and out of shape, whereas I'm 5'11' 150lbs and lean muscle. Being skinnyfit/ottermode definitely helps.

Led light strobing on helmet
steel toe shoes
backpack filled with ammo in front of stomach
backpack filled with peanutbutter in the back
you will get water from the cave so bring iodine/chlorine drops

There is hardly any life in caves, aside from bats, salamanders, cavefish, and maybe small rodents. The caves I went to were too narrow for large animals or predators to get in.

My last encounter with a cave was when I was on top of a mountain with my brother when a thunder storm rolled in out of nowhere. Our original way up was a no-go because it had moss and lichen, and now that it was wet, it was very slippery and the fall below would be deadly. I found an alternate path down, and I found a cave that we could have hidden in, but I'm 95% sure I saw a mountain lion's eyes looking back at me so we kept moving.

I once took a guided tour of a cave in southern Indiana after a night of heavy rainfall. A good portion of the tour was on a iron grate walking path hovering over what is usually a modest stream like 6 feet down. Though when i had gone the water was a raging murky torrent just barely below the suspended path. I probably wasn’t in any danger but it sure felt sketchy. The tour guide was a great guy too. It was actually his last tour as we were told by some other workers there.

I can not emphasize this enough, as important as a flashlight and helmet, you will spend huge amounts of time on your knees or crawling

Caving is a lot of fun don't get discouraged!

I started caving to help deal with my PTSD and panic disorder, it's extremely relaxing once you get into it.

Expect to get afraid, bordering on panic attack person to person the first time your body realizes you are REALLY deep underground, or going through your first squeeze holes.

Remember to have your first run into the cave be a bit short, even twenty or thirty minutes then come back out, just to try it on

Finally, you are definitely bringing too much gear you may overheat in a wetsuit, compression pants and jacket
