My advice is that if you have no other options, try and live at shelters for as long as possible. Sleeping outside can be much more difficult because you have to constantly be worrying about the weather and having water and being able to go to the bathroom and etc. Then again it depends on the shelter or if you even have one in your area. Some of them can be dangerous but all of them have lots of very very traumatized people with lots of PTSD and other issues. So developing good personal self defense skills (not physical, emotional) will be a very good idea.
It is also very important to keep the right perspective. Once you are on the streets it will be very easy for you to give up on your fate and say "this is my life now, I'm homeless."
Try to have some goal in mind for getting yourself out of this. I'm not sure what that could be but I'm sure you could find one. Although whatever mindset you have going into it will be broken over and over again, regaining the will to maintain newer and better perspectives will ensure your livelihood and eventual thriving.
Also it will be very important for you to reach out. Even if you don't have friends other people can support you physically and emotionally so much in place of your family. Finding connections is the best way to find opportunities to get yourself out of this mess.
The experiences you have will likely be parallel to going to war. You may not be capable of preparing yourself for what will happen, but after this is over you should treat yourself with fragile rest and care.
Again, reach out as much as you can. Acquantainces, old family members, other homeless people, whatever. But be smart about it.
