My neighbor has chickens and roosters, they kinda wander around free allot.. today they came visited me while I had my morning coffee in my backyard. How do befriend these chickens? They came within 3 feet of me...do I have any chance of petting a chicken? Or calling it over like a dog?

He has a fenced in area and all that .. so they just seem to go back on their freewill. No drama with turkey vultures, or a fucking cat I saw a week ago on my property. Neighbor gave me some awesome eggs last week - so like I said I'm cool with it. It's very relaxing watching them. The crowing isn't bad either, we get up early as it is.

Get some mealworms, seeds, or veg/fruit. You can train chickens the same way you train a dog. I have mine trained to come to me or go in their coop when I say go home to them. They're a lot of fun. You should get some chickens bro. Hens won't crow and produce eggs without a noisy rooster. I have about 50 right now and I'm increasing my numbers every 3-4 weeks.

How can you not?

Unless you are a great big fat person, if a chicken is within 3 feet of you it should be no problem to grab it. They are quick but not fast so worst case it it sees you coming and tries to run you might have to chase it for just a bit. It will tire easily and stop going, then you just scoop it up.

And bro let me assure you that once you get your mitts around the thing it ill chill and you can do whatever. You can pet it or whatever. I had one one time I squeezed it and an egg fell out so I had chicken and eggs.

Don't bother with anything special. Chickens will eat anything. Really, anything. If you have pet food or even kitchen scraps, they'll love you. You'll know they like you when they show up every day expecting food and shitting on your porch.

Roosters are almost universally banned in cities. I called code enforcement on a neighbor that had one because it kept waking me up at 430am and I often have to work late at night.

I have a flock of about 20 chickens, one night last year a coon got in and almost killed one of my hens, she ended up going blind in one eye and I had to "nurse" her back to full health and ever since then she walks right up to me and sits on my lap. Pic related

They're very easy, start with a flock of like 3-5, they'll only use an area of like 4x4'. Give them a little outside run or just let them free range, make sure they have food and water. Simple as that. It's the easiest animals to take care of because they take care of themselves to a certain degree.

My mom had chickens in a big coop for many years. They would roam around the yard and I would make a clicking and ksss ksss sound while gently steering them with a stick to get them back into the coop at night. It was really cute watching them jump up to 3-4 feet in the air to bite berries off the mulberry tree. Sometimes I would feed them lizards or grasshoppers that I caught. They would tear that shit apart instantly and try to steal it from one another. Unlimited eggs is based, of course. Shitty thing is they have a pecking order and there would always be one or two hens that would get their feathers plucked off by the others. Always felt bad for those unlucky ladies.
When they were new and exciting, we spent a lot of time in the coop socializing the chicks, so the first few generations were really friendly and used to humans as bros. Now they just see us as caretakers. They respect us and know that our presence means food, but they don’t follow us around or welcome our touch. The previous generations would let us pick them up and do whatever we want. We could toss them in the air and watch them “fly” down like 30 feet across the yard and they wouldn’t think anything of it. but these ones don’t like to be picked up or caught.

I keep chickens. Sit near them and feed them something each day and they will come to trust you pretty quickly. If you reach out towards them or make any sudden movements in their direction, they will still flee from you though. To pet one, place your chair out in the yard and wait for them to come within your reach. Once one of them turns their back to you and starts pecking at the ground, you can reach out to to and it will not see your arm coming. It may tolerate a few pets before walking away. All this depends on you gaining their trust first, of course.

Next I plan to buy 10 Jersey Giants (picrel) and 10 Guinea Fowl. Hopefully the Guinea Fowl will watch for hawks and sound the alarm so the flock can run to cover, and the Jersey Giant roosters may dissuade the whole endeavor in the first place.

Just make sure you have the infrastructure for them to survive before you get them. I read a book and watched some youtube videos - really isn't that difficult. They need shelter/protection from predators, food when free ranging isn't enough, and sanitation which can be dealt with in multiple ways. I have a chicken tractor setup that can be moved every few days and the droppings fertilize the grass

Nah it's just a pic off an image search, an example of a Jersey Giant. They were bred to replace turkey meals but they couldn't commercially compete with broiler chickens like the Cornish Cross in terms of feed to harvest. However I'm a big fan of them and wanting to raise a bunch because:

>their size can help ward off certain predators
>they are multi-purpose, giving both egg and meat production
>they're generally gentle giants and aren't known for aggression

I think it'd be badass to have these birds walking all over my property. For this spring I'm also planning on making a black soldier fly bin to provide the flock with a ton of protein and calcium. That, some table scraps, and free ranging should be enough for them.

Give them treats like other anons have suggested, they'll start to like you. I have some Lavender Orpingtons I got to really like me by giving them all sorts of treats like fruits when they were young, and now they'll come right up to me and eat from my hand and stuff. Don't give them anything like chocolate or super sugary though, it'll kill them. Pic is one of my hens, she very soft.
