but is the rural culture at least interesting?
if you mean the local "fudds and hillbillies" (as much as that applies to Europe) - not really. I mean sure, there's actual centuries old culture as opposed to rural America (no offense), and some older people were traditional attire, but other than that it's not much different. You don't really notice anything different.
On the other hand you have a lot of young and old /out/ people enjoying nature, active alpine clubs and mountaineering groups, but I guess that's the case everywhere where there are mountains.
