So, Im an Aussie. I would like to plan a trip to USA.
I'd like to do a bit of hiking and camping, and I am giving myself 4 weeks at your wonderful country. Just a few questions ( mind you, this is a spur of the moment thing and I have nothing actually planned as of yet, but will ensure I am properly ready before hand)
Where would be the best place to start? Any other places you can recommend?

Where should I avoid as an Australian tourist?

Do I really need to protect myself with a weapon?
If so, can I obtain a gun?

I would like to visit during spring or Autumn, any specific gear that I would require? I'm used to hot, dry weather.

it's not really a bad idea but, it really comes down to increasing the limited control that we have over our own lives. you don't "need" one here more than anywhere else in the world.

sorry, I was just referring to purchasing. if you can borrow one from a bro and if you get a non-resident hunting license, you can carry in most states. some states are retarded though.

I've made you a rough map of places to avoid. They either are not worth your time or stuff you can easily find in your home country. Some people will try to vouch for certain areas/states but they're probably locals or there is 1 or 2 minor /out/ related attractions that have bigger/better options elsewhere. The East coast is mostly an overpopulated clusterfuck, particularly from NC to NY. I only left the South East areas open in case you're interested in the swamps, otherwise, it's just sand beaches and boring fish compared to what you would find in Aus. To see some things you won't find back home, the Pacific Northwest is probably your best bet with the redwood forests and the Rockies through much of the West. The far North East and Upper Michigan peninsula/Wisconsin area is a more subtle beauty but special none the less, and not something you'd see in your home country.

I was a Boy Scout in California, so I'm quite partial to my home state, and I know for a fact there is a ton of diverse environments to explore here. However, you said you know hot and dry pretty well enough, so you can definitely consider other options.

Seriously, though, just look at pictures of Yosemite or the Sierra Nevadas or the Rockies or the Cascades or the Appalachian Trail and I'm sure you'll find something beautiful and worth exploring.

Obviously there are white people to avoid, and its stupid to think otherwise. Any white that dresses like a black man, is pretty much dirt here. There are parts but much of those states is desert , which I'm sure you've had your fill of. Not to mention, coastal California could be easily confused for a beach in Australia.
