I'm planning a hike in southern Norway early November, aiming to cross through Jotunheimen National Park
Any Norwaybros able to give me some tips?

I'll need some wintergas which I can't take on the plane over with me, so having to ship it to someone in Norway then I'll collect it from them in person
Any of you know Norwegian/EU online outdoor shops that ship camping gas to norway?

Unsure if you're looking for the primus specific wintergas or something else but pretty much every sports store will stock isobutane canisters, either MSR or jetfuel usually.
Fjellsport.no is the best store for out gear in Norway imo:

Don't have much experience in National parks since i mostly go around locally but have fun : )

I was going to take my normal boots and wear wool socks with waterproof socks over them
I would bring my mountain boots but they are agony to walk in for anything more than a few miles and im hoping to do at least 10 miles a day

What kind of boots and mountain boots do you have?

I would say stick to the trails and become a member of DNT so you can rent a key for the huts just in case.

If you go I would recommend you take these plus another light pair of approach shoes (walking shoes/boots). Otherwise Jotunheimen in November is proper winter season (autumn will be over in the next one or two weeks) and you'll sit in the tent from 4-5pm to 10am because of no sunlight.

Galdhøpiggen 2469m, Glittertind 2464m, snowfall altitude is below 2000m already. You can try in late Mai, early June or early-mid September if you want a real challenge and avoid the crowds.

In November I would suggest stick to the lowlands and take daytrips into the mountains only when the weather is good. In Februrary you can go with skies on long trips because there will be more sunlight.

If you want a real trekking adventure and challenge with a low/lower chance of death you can try crossing the Hardangervidda in November. Good luck.

If you're just doing hikes on cleared trails in temperate temperatures, I'd recommend a good pair of trail runners. Much lighter and softer cushion for long hikes. And much more breathable as well.

no you dont know what you are up to. you are literally talking about HIKING in winter and specificly a mountain with a glacier and not one mentioning of skis. do you even know how to dig a snow cave to survive if needed? probably hasnt packed a snowshovel i guess.
you sound like the typical southron who has checked average temperatures in some city and think that covers all of norway, not even understanding how average temperature works.
please tell what you are used to.

how exactly do you plan to hike on foot in 1m+ of loose snow in a mountain? its a very possible scenario. you be lucky to cover 1km in a day before getting completely soaked and exhausted.
your timing and route is a huge gamble, i would try something in a more forested and lowland area, maybe coastal.

I want to go hiking near trondheim next year when it gets warmer. It doesn't need to be summer hot so at what point can I go to norway without having to rely on snow shoes?

Mid/End of June is usually when enough snow has melted for hillwalking and hiking in the fjells. Early June in the low regions. Though you might still have to cross some snowfields in hilly terrain but it shouldnt be a problem. If you want to climb mountains better bring snowshoes or wait until early/mid july. snowmelt is different each year.

I start hiking normally in Mai to avoid the crowds (they start coming around 15th of June) but you'll still have a lot of snow on the hills and the mountain passes are sometimes (usually) completely snowed in. No problem then because enough snow has melted already you can do it without snowshoes but it is a real challenge psychologically if you havn't done it before (think 10km of knee-deep snow to the next warm hut). I would advise you bring trekking-gaiters anyways and good boots or rubber boots because even if there is no snow it will be very wet and soggy due in the early season due to the snowmelt.

pic rel is a mountain pass at 600m at the bottom and 800m at the top (1000m but you cant see it) around Mai 30th. there is a regular trail and a big river under the snow. If you want to go at this time you have to be able to navigate terrain like this.

From Stjordal you have the best /out/ options. Bergen is more touristy with the fjords.
1 Most scenic and popular: take a bus down to Otta and hike north through Rondane national park to Hjerkinn then through Dovrefjell national park to Oppdal. Here you can take a bus back to the airport. You can easily spend 2 weeks here on different trails exploring the mountains or hike everything straight in 4 to 5 days then hike to some of the other national parks.
2. Vast, rugged and lonely: Take a Bus north to Lierne nasionalpark. Thats the lonliest option and here you have the best chance of seeing brown bears in all of Norway. If you are 100% /out/ and you dont need any huts or infrastructure you can hike back down to the airport in 10 days.
3. Hike along the border from Teveldalen / Storlien to Grøvelsjøen (Grövelsjön). less hardcore than 2. but not many people until late in the season and very well maintained trails and infrastructure yet still lonely in June (a lot of different trails south to choose from on both sides of the border)

On the swedish side the huts dont open until June 15. or 18. usually so when you get there early there will be emergency cabins / rooms technically not for free but nobody is there to check and nobody cares anyways. Very comfy

You mean the Nordkalottleden? With skies on the snow? End of February to End of April if you are 100% hardcore (I'm not going to do it). Otherwise on foot from 1. June to 30. September but June can be impossible when there is not enough snowmelt the mountain passes in two sections in Norway can be unpassable then you have to walk around them through sweden like frodo going through moria (its not recommended because of orcs (niggers) in the depths of the kungsleden) or the government delays setting up the summer bridges over some rivers because of snow. This can be a tough trail if you are unlucky with the weather there are some tough sections and dangerous river crossings because the government doesnt repair bridges enough. You can do it but its a real challenge.

can recommend this area because of its easy access. there is a popular route that starts at stjørdal/trondheim airport, you basicly walk outside the airport, do a few hours of roadside hiking then turn off into nothing and continue south/east until you reach the swedish border, takes about 7 days. from there you can roundtrip and hike back, take the shortcut back to civilisation and take a bus back to the airport or you continue into sweden for a few more days where you can take a train back to the airport. there will be people on the trails but its a wast and open area thats really nice to hike off trail and then you are all alone. great fishing if you care about that.

Thanks for the list Anon. I'm not 100% /out/ and I want to use the cabins provided by the DNT for tours. Places that I can reach easily by plane + public transport are the best as I don't own a car (and I dont really want to rent one). I'll look at the map on ut.no and keep your recommendations in mind.

That trip was on my list but I wasn't able to find a proper way to get back to trondheim with public transport online. Can you share any tips? I can either get some taxi for 200 euros or I have to ride a schoolbus I think? The last cabin would be the Nedalshytta and then go down to Vaektarstua.
Is there a train in Sweden that goes back to trondheim so I can go sightseeing there too if I want to?

atb . no and you can choose english in the meny. will give you everything including bus from væktarstua and trains to sweden (just type in storlien its the first station there but it continues all the way to østersund)
schoolbus and public transport is the same btw...
