I have recently taken to heading out for new places, further up in the mountains than i usually go. All of a sudden terror over bears and rabid foxes attacks settles in every time i visit a new place. Anyone got tips or has dealt with this?

Ultimately this is just an adult comfort blanket. It's not bad to be armed in itself but too many Americans use its presence as some kind of emotional crutch. (Not unlike caffeine and alcohol, actually.)

Seriously though, even a wooden staff or a 5€ milsurp shovel is a significant force multiplier for us poor disarmed eurofags, and that's gotta be legal pretty much everywhere else. Another option is to have momentary amnesia and forget about the local weapon laws.

I don't have one, but I see the cold steel bushman brought up a lot in the knife threads. Been considering picking one up since they are cheap. Once you find yourself a nice stick you have yourself a pretty serious spear and spears have always seemed like the idea melee weapon when out in the woods.

It is a comfort blanket because 99% of the time it's overkill and not needed. Shrug. A fetishism doesn't obviate the reality. I'd even say the bearspray I carry is a comfort blanket, it's just not nearly as much of a pain to haul as a firearm.

risk is a matter of probability but also gravity of outcome. being prepared for the disastrous edge case when warranted is absolutely reasonable, wild animals do exist out there and you're not bringing that spray around for nothing, despite the rationalising

This is true, the problem is the only wild animal conceivably dangerous enough that simple bear spray or a knife *might* not suffice is a mountain lion or perhaps a rabid dog or boar, and these are still very rare instances. (For grizzlies you're fucked either way, a simple handgun wouldn't be enough. Which incidentally is why I would refuse to hike alone in grizzly country.) Firearms are much more important when you're in town imo. People are more terrifying and more likely to off you than any big cat. I guess it's just a matter of how you evaluate your risk profile. Looking at the stats, animals don't particularly frighten me out there. I wouldn't bring a gun backpacking, but I would bring it to car camp, because meth heads and drunk rednecks and wayward felons and cartel members can all be real threats to my life.
