>>2471278Boiling kills all. No need to filter, except if you want to strain out particles/silt (but boiling + waiting for stuff to settle usually does the trick). It won't get rid of chemical pollutants (pesticides, industrial/agricultural runoff, heavy metals...) but neither will a filter.
Drinking boiled river water will be safe, but not tasty. Running it through an active charcoal filter might clear up the taste a bit.
