>>2475141Digging is illegal where I am, but it's not really a problem because surface collecting is more productive anyway. I live in a good area for cretaceous fossils, and spend a lot of the time in the summer hiking around remote areas in the badlands looking for fossils. On a hot June day, around 33 degrees C, I had hiked about 3.5km downstream from where I parked when I saw a big piece of bone at the bottom of a hill. I could tell right away that it was Ankylosaurid because they tend to have a certain texture to them. After picking up a few broken pieces I knew I had found a club. At the time I thought I had the whole thing but when I got home and cleaned it up I realized I only had half of it. Even then, it was like 50lbs of stuff to carry back. At some points you have to walk upstream through the river because the cliff face is falling apart and it could collapse on you. Along with that, I had to carry the large piece in my hands the whole way because my Camelbak isn't large enough. I ended up making it back to the car after after a few exhausting hours. If you've ever seen the show alone, I felt like Roland after he got his muskox. I was thinking about him doing trips to and from his camp while I was walking the fossil back to my car.
About a month later, I hiked back to the spot after a large rainstorm to look for the other half. Picrel is the other half.
