simple roll top bag. reachable water bottle holders that fit two smartwaters each. give it a basic skeleton frame, some good compression straps, and a giant stretchy mesh pouch on the back. padded straps over breathable ones. that's what i look for in a bag.
cinch tops are fine i guess if i'm not being as picky.

When people talk about brightly colored packs, all they’re doing is just outing themselves as a Neverout. Go to a busy trail and all you’ll see is pretty much what you see on REI’s website; gray, black, various shades of taupe and tan, some green, and a few blue. The days of wild colors are long in the past, both in what people use and what’s available.

I’m not sure where the meme even started. In the 90’s most of the colors were the same stuff you see now; earth tones, grays, black, and muted colors were the norm. Clothing was different, but even the neon skiing jackets weren’t common (and were on their way out, since that was an 80’s thing).

For short hikes on the trails around my house, I take a 5.11 Rush12 tacticool backpack. Perfect size to just fit everything else I need to boil up a cup of tea or fry some hotdogs along with a few other amenities. For camping I have a NevoRhino 60L pack.
