The Piikáni (Blackfoot) and many other Native American tribes used a tool that translates literally as "ember horn" to keep their fire. It consisted of a bison horn stuffed with peat for insulation and slightly damp moss that would burn slow and low, cradling a large coal.
A swift youth would often be sent running ahead of traveling groups to start a fire using the ember horn at a new encampment, war lodge, or other destination where a new fire was required.
