is going off trail a bad idea? (i will be following a creek)
and what should I look out for (I will be with someone)

For you, almost certainly, because you're asking this in the first place. Following a creek is pretty foolproof, though, one of the fundamentals of navigation.

That said, if you don't know to use a lensatic or base plate compass and topo map, then you really shouldn't, even with a GPS phone. You can get lost just out of sight of the nearest landmark.

Just set your phone to record a gps track.

If you get lost, just follow your gps recording back.

It really depends on where you are. In some parts of the southeastern US, going off trail means hacking through a nearly impenetrable jungle with a machete, only to find that the game trail you were following dead ends at a swamp. Good luck navigating with a map and compass when there are no landmarks to follow.

Walking next to a stream is ok, but it’s going to be very slow going.

Every time I go out I go off trail. For me it's the only way to set up camp. I spend a lot of time looking at maps of the area, satellite and topo. I use the sun and landmarks as my guide.

It's a good idea, but you should be very careful.
You could use brightly colored reflective cord as trailmarkers to find your way back.

I do it all the time, I have a shit sense of direction and litte land nav skills. I get lost as fuck but it's never really an issue, I just stay calm and give myself plenty of time to get back on trail.
One time while small game hunting I got so turned around I ended up like 3 miles away from my car on a different road, I stashed my gun and gear in the woods, tied a bandana to a tree, walked back to my car then drove up to retrieve my stuff. I have a ton of stories like that.
