Filming and Photographing apart, how can a drone be useful outside? Also, is it worth it to buy one and use it instead of a regular camera?

I've used mine for finding nearby trails, paths, water and good spots to camp. Still, I wouldn't bring it if I wasn't also taking pictures.

There are plans online of a 3D printed module you can attach to drones to carry seeds up high and release them into the wind. I want to do that with native perennial seeds.

Seems useful in non-heavily wood areas, which is one of the two times I can think you may need an arial view. The other being canyon exploring. If I had one I probably wouldn't bring it very often.

Well, you could still look for clearings and stuff in wooded areas I guess. I find it to be the most useful in foothills and mountains.

Drones capture great /out/ footage. But they banned in most areas worth capturing (at least in the US).

Look up missing hikers in your area. You can use your drone to search inaccessible terrain for traces of them, like scraps of clothing and dropped items. Particularly handy for glaciers crevasses, boulder fields, and scree.

I was watching some news footage from Florida after Ian and I realized that the reporter was walking around but the camera man was running a drone.
So the camera could pan around smoothly and even change altitude to get a better view on the damage while having a live commentator just a pivot away.

its illegal to fly drones in national parks. technically you can fly a zone with line of sight from outside of the park, but most are no fly zones on top of the park-wide regulations. national forests are a mixed bag. most of the good 'squatch spots you can't drone.

Also....
I screw around with model rockets but I only have a 4 acre clearing surrounded by forest. I use my drone to fly the treeline to locate lost rockets. I just wish I had a large enough one to actually grab the rocket when I find them but that would still be risky of getting a $500 drone stuck trying to retrieve a $20 rocket.

Little more complicated than that, that style of rig usually requires at least two crew; one person running the camera gimbal and the other guy doing the flying.
