Want something kinda fancy. Nothing expensive but better than a block of metal on a wooden stick would be nice.

Fiskars N10 or N7. They're like X7 and X10 fiberglass handle hatchets but they're made with a wooden handle molded into the overstrike guard. They look cool as fuck and have a 25 years warranty. You'll probably never have to rehandle them.
The 7 model is only 10cm shorter than the 10 model, but also consider that the head is smaller. One is more of a portable backpacking hatchet, the other is a half-axe so a bit more capable and universal.

AFAIK the N series uses a better steel, so you're not getting just an X series with a wooden handle. If this is over budget just get an X, they're the most bang for the buck at that price and they outperform much more expensive axes.

well he talked about a hatchet and kindling, I think he wants a smaller one?
the X11 is the same length as the X10 but the head is heavier since it's a splitting axe. maybe too heavy for backpacking?

oh yeah then get the X11. It's some 45cm long so not full size but a half-axe, like the X10 but dedicated for splitting.
It's rated for ~20cm diameter logs but you see people spit bigger shit with it all the time on YT

I have a fiskars x27 for splitting, and use my knife for batoning smaller sticks for the meme

I was skeptical about the fiskars but so far it's been g2g. They say if you use the back as a hammer it voids the warranty but honestly if this breaks I'll get a wranglerstar-approved axe instead

by the way you shouldn't really use the poll as a hammer on any axe, not just Fiskars. Since the steel on the cheeks is softer, it will spread the eye.

you're better off using a stick for that, even if you tap lightly it's going to deform the eye in the long run
if you still want to do that, avoid keeping the mask on while you use the axe poll (people do this for safety) because when the edge will dig into the mask and eventually the stitching/rivets.

I would check kijiji/market place for a vintage hatchet. If there isnt one you like listed Im not sure it would be worth waiting for one to pop up, im not sure how frequently people sell them

I got a sweet vintage walters for $30 just a month ago. but with buying a used hatchet/axe you have to be prepared to tighten a lose head which could mean replacing the wedge

I'd really like to get an old axe head and make a new handle for it from scratch since I can work with wood well enough, but I'm too worried of hanging it incorrectly and have it fly off and decapitate someone. I'm pretty sure it's quite simple to do but I'd like to be around someone who can do it when I learn.
