Looking for a bike that can handle paved roads and dirt trails. Are there any bikes that perform decently at both? I don't really want to get two bikes because I will often bike through paved roads to get to the dirt trails and I can't just swap bikes out once the terrain changes.

I'm willing to spend $1,000. Is there anything good at this price point or do I need to go higher?

I should clarify that the dirt trails I ride on have things like hard clay, root systems sticking up out of the ground, fallen logs I have to pick up my bike to get over, soft sand, mud, etc. The paved roads are well, just paved roads.

This is way too vague.

Generally, all bikes can go on paved roads and most bikes can go on dirt roads. Tires that run well on paved roads are shit for dirt roads and vice versa, but tires are cheap.
Nobody can give you good advice without actually knowing how rough those dirt roads really are and how rough you ride them.

Go to a local store with a better descritption of your requirements. Local, because you can actually sit on the bike first, see how it fits you.

I once had a set of hybrid tires on my mountain bike. They were smooth in the middle and had knobby tread on the sides. They were good on roads but barely okay on trails.

Regular Mt Bikes work just fine on pavement...they are just a little more inefficient with the added weight and tire surface area...but not enough to warrant 2 bikes.

According to the specs you can lock up the front suspension when you're on a paved road so you don't waste pedaling efficiency with the suspension. This makes it seem like a good hybrid. Anyone familiar with these?

you can do that on a lot of bikes you dont need a hybrid for that

Get a gravel bike. The kona posted here should be fine, kona has much more expensive stuff. But on a gravel bike you can fit paniers easily and carry around gear better than on an mtb. MTB is awesome, but mostly for fun sport or light trips.

Here are your choices: A gravel bike, a hybrid bike (rigid or with front suspension), or a modern hardtail cross country mtb.
You can base your choice on how much paved vs dirt roads you ride and the state of said dirt roads. I have a modern xc hardtail. It is very good on dirt roads, but slow on paved roads. I could play with different tyres to make it better on paved roads, but then I would compromise the dirt road abilities.
I would advise against a 90's rigid steel mtb, because they suck in evey category.
If you buy a new bike, try to look for a model of last year, they sell them with big discounts, because the shops want to get rid of old supply.
Pic related is my bike I bought in 2020. I got it with 40% discount because it was a 2019 model.

Honestly you don't need to overthink this or get anything too fancy, unless you plan on seriously riding some trails. Just get a hard tail with some 27.5" to 29" tires and you should be fine.

I'm looking at a Trek Marlin 8 which is a hard tail bike that costs about $1320. I test rode it at a local bike shop and can get a 6% discount in it including any accessories I buy in the store to go with it if I choose to add any. Is this a good deal or are there better bikes in this price range I should be looking at? I'm planning to testing a Rockhopper Expert but when I compared the two they have almost identical components so it seems their only real difference is their frame. Any other bikes I should consider?

I always advise people to wait and check classified adds for a decent used bike. Tons of good bikes used in like new condition sitting in someone's garage collecting dust.

I'm not sure about bike pricing in the United States, but you should be safe with $1,000,
With a bit more budget you could also get a gravel bike which would most likely suit your style the best, however they're overpriced and not as practical.

Hybrid bikes tend to have skinnier tyres and more relaxed geometry, meaning that they're tougher to handle on actual rough terrain than hardtail MTBs.

I tried out a Trek Marlin 8 Gen 2 and it has what you described here. It felt almost perfect, just wish it was slightly faster. Is there any aftermarket part I could buy to make a 1x12 bike slightly faster? Thing is, the bike felt fast enough off road but when I hit pavement I wanted just a little bit more speed. I might just get it though. I'm going to bike shop tomorrow and going to have them recommend me some bikes to try out and research before I make my final decision.

This will make the bike more practical during faster parts of the journey, but harder to use on climbs.

They make you hold a more efficient foot position, and utilize more muscles by allowing you to not only push down on the pedals, but also pull them up. It's especially practical during high cadence activities such as climbing.

There's probably a lot more ways to make the bike faster, but I'd recommend getting clipless pedals (such as SPDs), if you're not using them already. They've been a game changer for me, and I'd say it's one of the more essential bike upgrades one can get. You get used to them really easily, so don't get discouraged about being connected to your bike. They also make you more stable on the bike.

Doesn't this make you more likely to get hurt? I've avoided a lot of injury on my bike by simply hopping off it it quickly if i realized i was about to take a bad tumble. You can't do that if your feet are attached to it.

Clipping off takes a fraction of a second, it's a lot less limiting than it seems. I've had three very minor accidents because of clips that happened when I was stationary.
