Growing english ivy

I have no experience with gardening at all, it's just that I moved a house a few months ago, and got nostalgic for the ivy-covered front of my old house.
I have access to lots of this plant that I can cut and take, if that helps.

Sorry if this is not the place to ask for this, I'm kind of new to this site.

Where do you live?
If you live in the USA you're growing one of the worst invasive species we have.
Try Virginia Creeper, its a native, produces berries for bird, and its adhesive pads do not damage brick like Ivy.

Oh, I do not live in the US, I probably should have said where I live from the beginning, considering the subject. I'm pretty sure it is not considered invasive here.
Though the part about the ivy damaging brick walls convinced me to find another plant. this Virginia Creeper is not considered native here, but according to some sources I found it shouldn't be a problem.

That's a myth, ivy can't do that.
Also Virginia creeper is a disgusting nuisance plant that you'll regret planting for the rest of your life.
Just plant ivy, use wires to keep it tightly close to the wall you want to cover and in a year or two it will start to climb. Unlike Virginia creeper, which remains a shitty vine for all its life ivy will form beautiful large trunks, once they get big enough they won't even need to cling anymore as they become self-sustaining. Once ivy matures it also forms beautiful flowers and berries that attract pollinators and birds.
Ivy can also be mixed with Lonicera caprifolium for visual variety and scent.

Virginia creeper is a beautiful plant, much more so than hedera helix. Only downside is that it's not evergreen, but it does have great autumn colour. Unbeatable colour. As long as u keep it well pruned it acts well. Hedera however is a pain. It CAN destroy a wall once it gains some good size. I've seen it literally tumble walls down

Boston ivy however, will not. But it is a fast grower and may become too heavy if left unchecked

I have virginia creeper in my yard, and grows all over very quickly. I wouldnt call it ugly, but its not as attractive as a nice variegated english ivy, until the fall. Once it starts turning red and orange, virginia creeper cant be beat

Virginia creeper's autumn color is great, but it grows and self-seeds so uncontrollably it's not worth it.
If a garden has a wall or fence covered with Virginia creeper it will also have saplings of it in every corner, hedgerow and tree.
Unlike ivy it's extremely fast growing from the start and hard to keep in check.
Also if you happen to live in a place where Virginia creeper is invasive planting it might destroy entire habitats.
What you see in the picture used to be a holly oak, now it's just an impenetrable mass of Virginia creeper. The entire woodland looks like that.

Invasive species are a bit amusing to me. I agree with your points, but I live in virginia creeper's natural range so english ivy is the invasive pain in the ass here.
I've seen anons say similar things about trout on here. Brook trout are the finnicky natives here, and brown trout outside of stocked waters should be killed with prejudice. Over in europe though, its the exact opposite. Just kinda funny to me
