Why are reflector ovens so hard to find/expensive on the internet? It's three sheets of metal welded together; I could have made one in high school shop class. There's only one on Amazon and it's $90. What gives? I want my Pillsbury biscuits.

But you should make one yourself, anyone who's ever welded something could easily do it.

I don't have the tools. You'd need an arc welder and whatever else.
I've improvised with pie tins and a billy can with limited success; pic related. but I'd like to be able to get more elaborate with outdoor cooking.
Just wondering if anyone has one, and where you got it.

Well okay, if I really applied myself toward making one I'm sure I could. but it just seems like the most basic piece of camping kit and it's so simple I'm amazed they aren't a dime a dozen. Imagine searching for a spork and learning they're $80 and only manufactured by one company. It's frustrating.

Low demand = low production numbers = high price

The thing folds up and would have taken some time to design like that, and then it must be manufactured and shipped etc. So, I can see how the price gets up to around $80. It does seem a bit high, I might imagine it to be something that could be had for around $60.

But, one that folds, and is sturdy enough to handle the heat and weight of food takes some engineering.

I like the rivets suggestion, and I could imagine a dozen other ways to design something like this.

My Mom got a grant to go to Honduras to teach the peasents how to make solar ovens out of newspaper, cardboard boxes and aluminum foil (as if peasents have that shit!). Got there just in time for cat 5 Hurricane Mitch and was on the second plane out after the airport reopened. Sorry peasents, no solar ovens for you!

But it is really easy and they do work.

Me, I'm stepping up to a bigscreen tv solar metal forge! Search youtube for instructional.

Pic related, muh junk Sony from the alley. Seems a shame to strip it, but it really is junk.

The fresnel lens is what I'm after.

Srsly, check youtube and prepare for a new scale of imagination!

I think they used to be a lot more popular; my great-uncle who taught me bushcraft used one all the time and my mother hiked the AT with one in the '70s, so I grew up thinking they were the most normal thing to have on the trail. I've made hobo bread a dozen different ways, but nothing compares to reflector oven food.
