Going camping on Oct 21-23 and decided to pull the trigger on this bad boy, pic rel. Going to take my Nemo Tensor and Carinthia Defence 1 sleeping bag. Going to wear my wool sweater/gloves. It's going to be comfy as fuck.

What kind of winter gear is everyone else using or is looking at purchasing?

think i'm going to make an alpha direct hoodie and see how it compares to polartec 100 in my climate.
i tried out those swedeshit knitted fishnet merino baselayers last year and they were fucking great. forgot who makes them. they're pretty popular.

Try a mountain hardware airmesh. I have the half zip and it seems really useful for lightweight warmth. You can buy one without having to wait for a drop and they actually go on sale too.

Defense 1 by itself is a bit chilly, no?
I use the Carinthia XP TOP (civilian defense 1) and a down bag inside.

I would return the Nallo for a Nammatj because of ventilation and durability. I'm just using a tarptent + bivi without inner tent for the winter but have experience with the nallo 2 gt, unna, and nammatj.

The Defence 1 should be fine for next weekend, it's comfort rating is 39 degrees F. I also have the Defence 4 which I got for colder weather, which has a comfort rating of 0 degrees F. The Defence 4 and 1 can also be combined, if I need it for colder weather.

Keep going back and forth if i should buy a proper winter sleeping bag (-20f or colder) or just keep using my double 20f sleeping bag setup. Current setup works alright for most nights it's just big and kind of annoying to get into. But man those winter bags are expensive

if you want to backpack in the winter frequently, you'll eventually have to bite the bullet and accept its expensive to backpack in shitty weather. make a realistic assessment if you plan to backpack a lot in the winter or be more of a fair weather weekend warrior during the winter. nothing wrong with that. but its worth the investment if you intend to do a lot of winter stuff in the future.

I have those same boots. I just wear those with winter wool socks for winter hiking. If you are hiking in really muddy conditions you can get some leg gaiters. Salomon makes a insulated winter version of those boots as well. I wear muck boots and wool socks in deep snow. I got them so I can use them in the summer as well. I'd like some nice danners for winter though.

This was my setup last weekend. It hit low 30s and I was more than fine. Hoping to try the gear in sub 20s soon. I have ugq coming in about 3 more weeks. And an xmid in February, but this naturehike tent has been great for the price!

Went cold weather camping for the first time this week bros, the low was like 30 used a defense 1 bag with a thick comforter from home and wearing thermals and was still slightly chilly, but it was windy af too at my site

Think my big issue is I'm stuck half way between two styles of winter camping and don't want to pick one of the two. I'm more interested in the ski touring/mountaineering alpine style of winter camping but my location in northern Minnesota is much more suited to slower hot tent type setups. Think how I'm actually going to end up is close to how they do arctic expeditions with skis and a pulk but I don't have enough experience with that yet to decide what kind of sleeping bag would work good for the wide range of winter temps we get here (everything from just below freezing to -40f). A -20f bag would probably suit most of the winter but would definitely lock me out from some colder trips and a -40f bag leaves a huge gap between that and a +20f bag. Going to end up with an entire closet of bags and spend all my time debating which is the right one to bring instead of just going :D

Some of that, owning lots of bags for temp coverage is envietable. The good news is with a sled you can carry 50lbs of gear easy so an slightly inefficient setup. You may consider a -20F or -10F comfort bag, which could be paired with a lighter +20F bag or quilt to drop the temps on rare -40F trip, especially if you're not dedicated to it. I think -20 to -10F is a good winter range that you'll get a lot use out of.

Hilleberg included this (pic rel) inside a catalog they sent me with the tent. This kerlon material is pretty durable. I couldn't even rip the stuff all the way. The normal ripstop nylon ripped without much trouble.

You only need two. A big synthetic 2 season bag (2 lbs). and a downbag 3 or 3.5 seasons (2.5 to 3lbs).
That covers everything from 100F to -30F.

It's a good bag for the price. My main issue with it was volume. It takes up around 40% of my osprey 55L. Bag liners are fantastic, I used one in my summer bag (55F comfort) on a low 40F night and was good. But I'm a very hot sleeper, I find my comfort between transition and risk ratings. Your tensor will make it all good.

It is a complete pile of shit I do not recommend it. The only reason I bought it was for the pillow pocket. I hate when my pillow slides away from me during the night, having the pocket was great. It is cheap and it shows. I ripped the stitches in a corner with my feet even while wearing wool socks!

I bought it for 3-season use but I figured it would be more comfortable than uneven snow lumps.

Assume I have all the other gear and some winter camping experience to boot. Do I even need to worry about drafts if I'm in a double-wall tent?

This cot is made for winter camping and it's much lighter than the knockoffs. Based on the reviews the feet on it are too narrow and people recommend contact pads. If you wanted to save money you could just stitch or glue an emergency blanket to the bottom of your current cot. This will reflect the heat back up into your bag/quilt. More air space will give better insulation, but you would have to come up with some sort of baffle design to allow the space blanket to hang, it may or may not be worth doing all that. Try a night out without a reflector, then try a night with. They are super cheap either way.

I use a Luxe Mikipeak XL hot tent., pic related. Don't buy from the USA store btw, they're a scam now. It dipped below 0F last time I used it and I kept waking up really cold when the stove would go out. I was only using a shitty closed cell foam pad at the time.

The underquilt idea is interesting, I never realized the similarities of hammock and cot camping. I'm wondering if I could get away with laying a wool blanket over the cot to create that pocket of air.
