I spent 90% of my childhood in the woods in new England
Ended up catching Lyme at around 10-12 years old
Never saw the 'ring' that happens around the bite so I didn't know I had it
Then one day my knee swelled up to the size of a softball, with no pain
Went to several doctors who thought it was arthritis
Finally got tested for and confirmed it was a torn meniscus due to Lyme's
By then it had been in my system deteriorating my joints and heart for potentially years
I took the pills they gave me and haven't had any noticable effects since

Had it or something very similar for about a month. Had about twelve ticks total on me that weekend for under three hours. My joints felt like hell. Two weeks of antibiotics and it was gone. They don't test if you're symptomatic apparently because the test is pretty iffy, and they're going to prescribe the antibiotics regardless. Was almost too late to treat.
Plenty of kooks on the internet believe that it will come back regardless of that treatment, but they then go on to state their dipshit home remedies, so their opinions are dumb.

I will get the vaccine, though, because it's not worth being paranoid when I go /out/ without my treated gear for a day hike.

So there was a study, I think it was the swedish, they were looking for a way to keep their men safe from ticks while out in the woods. They did a control group and gave one garlic and the other group sugar pills. They found much less bites on the group that took garlic. From my personal experience I take a few cloves of garlic daily for health reasons, I chop it up and take it like a pill with water. Anyway, I went camping with some buds a while back, it was tick season and they were everywhere. All the guys got bites, I had many crawl on me but never took a bite. I really believe it was from the garlic. I also never have issues with mosquitos. Try it out bros.

Never saw a ring or a rash, never got tested, never felt sick. Not sure how to feel about Lyme, but I really have my doubts. How could I be routinely covered and nothing yet people say they see one on their clothes and take an antibiotics course? It's not adding up. Ever unreliable testing and imprecise symptoms don't help convincing me it's a real disease. Or at the very least that everybody is equally susceptible. Maybe there's a mechanism at play similar to sickle cell preventing malaria (not that I'm a nigger)

I wasn't born yet in the early 90s but I have spent some time in the pine barrens. LI hiking has some secluded beach views, but absolutely nothing physically challenging. Everything is so flat and close to civilization.

Ticks with Lyme have colonized new areas and even the concentration of Lyme viruses in individual ticks has gone up by a lot. Cause is dryer and warmer climate.

Bullshit. The average temperature has gone up a fraction of a degree in the past 20 years. 20 years ago I'd never even heard of a tick before, now they're supposedly everywhere. Climate change happens over a long timespan, whereas this tick epidemic happened seemingly overnight.

I'd rather get cancer with 90 than have a shit life starting at 30. But seriously, permethrine gets metabolized by most mammals, so nothing to worry about. I think only cats have a problem with wet permethrine, but that's not how you apply it anyways.
You put some into a plastic bag and soak socks, shoes, backpack, trousers, shirts, inner tents with it, then dry.
Once dry, this stuff is good for an entire season. In clothes that get washed, it's good for two to three washings.
The inner of my MSR Hubba was treated at the factory (companies call it "anti insect shield" or something like it, but it's permethrine), i bought it in 2018, it still kills ticks and mosquitos.
Sucks to be an insect not being able to metabolize even just a few molecules :)
