Anyone hiked the ADK high peaks on winter? These are the closest things to "real mountains" I have and it's a 6 hour drive. I've hiked around my state but we have nothing with high elevation here. Should I hire a guide my first time and see how it goes?

Nah. As long as you have moderate experience and can read weather, you'll be fine.
Bringing a buddy is always a good idea, though.
Generally speaking, talk to and join the Adirondack Mountain Club. Their maps are top notch and the people are unpretentious .. mostly.
You can have fun in the Catskills, too, in Metro-North range of the City.

If it's your first time hiking in the ADK I'd wait until the spring. Maybe I'm just a pussy who doesn't like hard winter ascents, but it gets pretty icy up there past November. It's much more enjoyable (and a bit less risky) bagging some peaks without snow. The peaks aren't really the challenge in the ADK, but moreso that the trails are abnormally rugged. That being said if you aren't experienced in winter mountaineering I wouldn't make an unguided trip your first. >>2481856 is on the money with the AMC's maps. If you prefer digital maps basically every provider has good ones for the high peak trails. The Adirondack Loj has a good loop that will take you to some of the prettiest sights in the region

I hate good weather hiking because of the people, there's too many everywhere, especially on the ADK, that is why I start hiking during bad weather. I don't mind the bad weather, the only thing the sketches me out is getting lost. I have a garmin and all, but still.

The ADK's high peaks map is the best. Vaccination requirements are stupid and so are guided hikes. Just hike Phelps on your own. It's not that difficult compared to most of the other high peaks.

Just go early in the season and focus on the more remote trails. They don't do maintenance on them until around June, so most people you want to avoid don't bother until then
